Randy Tinnin (D.M.A., Rutgers University/M.M., Juilliard/B.M., University of North Texas) is Director of the UNF School of Music and Professor of Trumpet at the University of North Florida School of Music. Dr. Tinnin is an active performer with regular appearances in Europe and throughout the U.S. with the trio Serafini. He has performed hundreds of concerts with professional symphony orchestras and baroque ensembles throughout the U.S. His research on the performance and pedagogy of high brass instruments of the 18th and 19th centuries has been published in the International Trumpet Guild Journal, the Journal for the Arts in Society, and has been presented at the 4th Romantic Brass Conference in Bern, Switzerland. An advocate for the arts in society, Dr. Tinnin was the Director of the HOPE Schools of the Arts, an arts-based mentoring program for under-served children in Spanish Harlem and Chinatown in Manhattan. This served as a model for the UNF Music Mentors Program, which sponsors UNF music students as they provide free music instruction for under-served students.

Dr. Michael Bovenzi teaches saxophone and serves as an instructor in music theory, computer music applications, woodwind courses and chamber music at the University of North Florida. He holds the position of Associate Professor.
As an educator, Dr. Bovenzi believes in active and engaged learning, in which students are involved in the musical decision-making process and will understand the components that make up an informed and meaningful performance. As a result, his students have won concerto competitions, MTNA events, principle chairs in All-State bands, and have had success at the graduate level. They have also successfully performed in masterclasses for important saxophone pedagogues including Claude Delangle, Dr. Fred Hemke, Jean-Michel Goury, Arno Bornkamp, Debra Richtmeyer, and Joe Lulloff. As a performer, Dr. Bovenzi is an active soloist of contemporary music and has performed and premiered numerous works at national meetings of the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) and the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS). His studio recording of Ed Martin’s Apparitions appears on the compact disc Wavefields, a compilation of music from the Experimental Music Studios of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Other recordings include two works by composer Gary Smart to be released on the Albany Records label, and his own debut recording to be completed later this year.Dr. Bovenzi has performed in Bangkok, Thailand, at Mahidol University for the 15th meeting of the World Saxophone Congress. He also hosted the 2011 Region 6 conference for NASA at the University of North Florida. Recent performances included premiering works at the NASA Biennial Conference in Tempe, Arizona, and at World Saxophone Congress XVI in St. Andrews, Scotland. His renowned teachers have included Debra Richtmeyer, Jonathan Helton, and Joe Lulloff. Dr. Bovenzi holds the Doctorate in Performance and Literature from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with a minor in music theory. He earned his undergraduate degrees in Music Performance and Composition with honors, and a Masters degree in Music Performance from the University of Florida.

Dr. Gordon R. Brock is Professor of Music and Director of Bands at the University of North Florida’s School of Music in Jacksonville, Florida, where he conducts the Wind Symphony, instructs courses in conducting and woodwind performance and coordinates the UNF Conducting Symposium. Earning his B.S.E. from Dickinson State University, M.M. from Michigan State University, and D.M.A. from the University of Colorado-Boulder, Dr. Brock’s career as a music educator encompasses elementary through university levels.
Under Dr. Brock’s leadership as chair (2002-12), the Department of Music was awarded an elite flagship designation (Music Flagship Program) and emerged as a program of prominence recognized throughout the region for its renowned faculty, dedication to student learning, and engagement with the community as it continues to garner recognition as one of the fastest growing and leading performance-based programs in the country. Under Dr. Brock’s direction, the UNF Wind Symphony has performed at prestigious events and venues including the annual Upbeat Pink: A Musical Tribute to Breast Cancer Survivorship concert series in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic, the Florida Music Educators Association State Conference, Carnegie Hall, and Alice Tully Hall-Lincoln Center. Before joining UNF, Dr. Brock was Director of Bands at the University of North Dakota, conductor of the Greater Grand Forks Youth Symphony, and the Grand Forks Chamber Ensemble. Under his direction, the UND Wind Ensemble performed at two North Dakota Music Educators Conferences, the Ohio Music Education Association/North Central MENC Professional Conference, and a joint concert series in Great Britain with the Central Band of the White Russian Army. In addition to an annual CD project dedicated to recording the best in traditional and contemporary wind literature, Dr. Brock instituted an annual Conducting Symposium, which attracted both regional and international participants. Having been twice honored by the Alberta Provincial Government for his nationally recognized ensembles and contributions to music education throughout Canada, Dr. Brock was also included in the fifth edition of “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.” He has served as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States and Canada, including Japan and Israel. In 2006, he was acknowledged as a Distinguished Alumnus of Dickinson State University and as the UNF Gerson Yessin Professor (2010-12). Dr. Brock has performed with a broad spectrum of internationally recognized organizations within the mediums of chamber music, jazz, wind band, theater, dance, and orchestra. He is a member of the College Band Directors National Association (state chair, 2003-2005), Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Beta Mu, National Association for Music Education, Florida Bandmasters Association, National Band Association, and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. A chapter contributor to the newly released GIA publication, The Art of Interpretation of Band Music, Dr. Brock continues to serve as a Research Associate and author for the instrumental music education series Teaching Music through Performance in Band, a series that now serves as a primary text in more than 300 universities in the United States and 20 countries.

Rhonda Cassano has been a member of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra since 1979, is currently the Professor of Flute at the University of North Florida, and has served as Professor of Flute at Jacksonville University. Cassano is an active recitalist and chamber musician, founder of "Sound Effects: Music at MOCA," Synergy Chamber Ensemble, the St. Johns Chamber Players, and the St. Mark's Bach Ensemble and has appeared as a soloist with the Jacksonville Symphony on numerous occasions. Cassano holds a Master of Music degree from Florida State University where she studied with Charlie DeLaney. In subsequent years she studied with Geoffrey Gilbert, former principal flutist with the Royal Philharmonic under Sir Thomas Beecham, and in master classes with the acclaimed British flutist and former solo flutist with St. Martin in the Fields, William Bennett.
In 1987 and 2000, Cassano was a winner of the National Flute Association's newly published music performer’s competition, and has appeared several times as soloist at the NFA conventions. She was awarded an artist-fellow to the 1989 Bach Aria Festival and has participated in the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival and the Colorado Music Festival.Cassano is a trained Andover Educator and teacher of Body Mapping, a system developed to help musicians perform with efficient, graceful, coordinated, and effective movement.

Classical flutist, Gia Sastre has spent many years performing as a freelance soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. Notable solo engagements have included recitals at Preston Bradley Hall in the Chicago Cultural Center, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Friday Musicale of Jacksonville. Recent concerts include the Music @ Main Intermezzo Series, Riverside Fine Arts, the Ponte Vedra Library Series and Riverside Presbyterian’s Wednesday Happenings. As a chamber musician, Ms. Sastre has appeared with numerous ensembles including Chicago’s CUBE ensemble, Accessible Contemporary Music, the Seram Flute Quartet, the Elgin Opera Ensemble and the Chamber Music Society of the Good Shepherd. For many years, she performed with Chicago harpist AnnLaura Tapia as part of Abellimento Flute & Harp duo. Their recording, Abellimento, a collection of flute and harp classics is available on Pandora and iTunes. Ms. Sastre currently performs as part of the Vivace Trio, a Jacksonville-based two flute and piano ensemble. As an orchestral player, she has had the opportunity to perform and substitute with many orchestras, most recently the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and the Coastal Symphony of Georgia. As an educator, Ms. Sastre works with many dedicated and talented students through her private studio and at the University of North Florida. Previously, she served as flute faculty for the DePaul University Community Music Program in Chicago. Ms. Sastre has presented recitals and masterclasses at Florida State University, Emory, DePaul and St. Xavier University and has helped to present the Annual UNF Flute Day. She is a current member of the Florida Flute Association and Jax Flutes as well as member and Farwell Award winner of the Musicians Club of Women. Originally from Miami, Fla., Ms. Sastre holds a Master of Music in Flute Performance from DePaul University in Chicago, where she studied with Mary Stolper and a Bachelor of Music in performance from Florida State University, studying under Charles Delaney and Eva Amsler. Ms. Sastre also traveled to Great Britain to pursue a resident course of study with Paul Edmund-Davies, then principal flutist of the London Symphony Orchestra.

Committed to the advancement of the next generation of clarinetists, Sunshine Simmons has received accolades as a performer throughout the country. Comfortable with the entire range of instruments in the clarinet family, her positions include Principal Clarinet with the Oregon Ballet Theatre, Bass Clarinet with the New Mexico Philharmonic, E-flat Clarinet with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and Clarinet with Chicago Philharmonic. She has also performed with the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Milwaukee, Grant Park and Detroit, as well as the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Santa Fe Opera, and Chicago Opera Theater. Sunshine’s chamber music activities have included performances with the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, 8th blackbird, International Chamber Artists, Present Music, Santa Fe New Music and Chatter. Festival involvement has included the Aspen Music Festival, the Spoleto Festival USA and the Frutillar Music Festival in Chile. Sunshine has also performed at the Ravinia Music Festival and the Winter Chamber Music Festival in Chicago.As a soloist, Sunshine was featured in the Chicago premier of Alan Shulman’s Rendevous for Clarinet and String Orchestra. Ann Adams recently joined the faculty at the University of North Florida where she teaches applied oboe and chamber music. In addition, she is on the music faculty at LaVilla School of the Arts as a band director. Dr. Adams is an active recitalist and clinician and has appeared as a soloist with the Stetson University Wind Ensemble, the Bach Festival Orchestra of Winter Park, the Florida State University Wind Orchestra and the Bach Festival Society of Kalamazoo. She is a frequent performer with various orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout central Florida. Dr. Adams has participated in the French Oboe Repertoire classes with Wayne Rapier and John DeLancie. She is an active member of the International Double Reed Society. A native of Florida, Reid is currently the principal hornist of the Jacksonville Symphony. Prior, he was a member of the New World Symphony in Miami Beach. Professor Reid's former teachers include Greg Hustis and William Capps. He has played with symphony orchestras in Dallas, Waco, Tallahassee, Albany, Aspen, Boston, Breckenridge, and the Dominican Republic.Professor Reid maintains an active role in chamber music, performing several times a year with the First Coast Woodwind Quintet. Hawkes has been a soloist with the East Texas Symphony Orchestra, Plano Symphony Orchestra, SMU Meadows Wind Ensemble and Interlochen Philharmonic. He was the Winner of the 2010 International Trombone Association Gilberto Gagliardi Competition. In 2011 and 2015, he was selected as a Finalist for the Lewis Van Haney Philharmonic Prize. Growing up in Plano, Texas, Hawkes was a trombonist in the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra for four years, the last two as Principal Trombone, and received its Outstanding Instrumentalist Award. Hawkes graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Trombone Performance at Southern Methodist University in 2014. Upon seeing a large hole in the path from student to professional in a very specific field, he utilized the Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies program at the Meadows School of the Arts, creating and completing the very first known Bachelor of Arts focusing on Orchestral Management. He also pursued studies as a Graduate Diploma student at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.Hawkes plays a 1979 Bach 42B, restored and rebuilt by Dallas-area brass technician Eric Edwards and treated by Ron Pinc of R.J. Pinc Brass Repair. Additionaly, he runs Hawkes Arts Consulting, LLC; an arts consulting firm specializing in assisting smaller performing arts organizations.

Dr. Andrea Venet is the Assistant Professor of Percussion at the University of North Florida where she directs the UNF percussion ensemble, teaches applied lessons, pedagogy, methods and percussion literature. Dr. Venet holds a DMA in Performance and Literature with a minor in Pedagogy, and the prestigious Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. Dr. Venet received her Masters in Percussion Performance from Rutgers University and a Bachelors of Music from Arizona State University. As a passionate educator, Dr. Venet’s research involves pedagogy, with focus on college percussion education at various levels, classical improvisation and historically informed Baroque performance practice techniques for Bach on marimba.
Kevin Garry currently performs in the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. Prior to joining the JSO, Garry was a member of the New World Symphony (Miami Beach) where he performed regularly under the leadership of Michael Tilson Thomas. While living in Michigan, Garry was Principal Percussionist with the Flint Symphony Orchestra (1988-1991) and a member of the Saginaw Symphony and the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. In 1992, Garry was elected by his colleagues to be the recipient of the "New World Symphony's Community Board Award for Leadership and Artistic Excellence."Garry started drumming in the fourth grade as a member of the Colonial Musketeers Fife and Drum Corps while growing up in Hackettstown, New Jersey. He remained with the group for eight years marching in parades festivals and competitions. Garry won the "New Jersey State Rudimental Snare Drum Championship" in 1979 and 1981. His primary rudimental snare drum instructors were famed DCI instructor Bobby Thompson and Peter Hubert. Throughout middle school and high school, Garry studied snare drum and drum set with Vincent "Muzzy" Mizzoni, and studied timpani and keyboard percussion with Alfred Jorgensen, timpanist with the New Jersey State Opera. During his college years, Garry performed with Disney's All-American College Band (1986), the American Waterways Wind Orchestra (1987), the National Repertory Orchestra (1988), Summit Brass (1988), and the Pacific Music Festival (1991). He graduated from Oberlin College with a B.A. in Biology and a B.M. in Percussion Performance. While at Oberlin, Kevin studied with Michael Rosen. He received his Masters Degree from the University of Michigan where he studied with Dr. Michael Udow and Salvatore Rabbio.Garry taught in the percussion department at Stetson University from 2005-2010, and currently teaches at Florida State College at Jacksonville, serves as an adjunct instructor at the University of North Florida and maintains a large private studio in the Jacksonville area.

Charlotte Mabrey was honored as a "Gerson Yessin Professor" and a Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of North Florida. Mabrey was the principal percussionist of the Jacksonville Symphony for more than 20 years. As a result, she has performed as soloist with the JSO on several occasions, including on Milhaud’s "Concertino, Ney Rosauro’s "Concerto for Marimba and Strings," and "Concerto for Percussion" by Richard Rodney Bennett as a part of the JSO Master Works Series.
Mabrey's duties at UNF included applied percussion lessons, percussion techniques, the "Live Music in Jacksonville" lecture class, and conducting the UNF Percussion Ensemble, which is extremely active both on and off campus. The group's performances include area colleges, at guest artists with the JSO, and at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention.Each year Mabrey presented as entertaining and eclectic recital at UNF titled, "An Evening of 20th Century Music." This innovative programs included works for solo marimba, multiple percussion, and chamber ensembles, as well as original works with fellow artist, Robert Arleigh White. In 1997, Professor Mabrey established the "Evening of 20th Century Music Scholarship Program." After 25 years, the event had its last performance in 2008.In 2001, Professor Mabrey was named "Distinguished Professor" at UNF. She retired in April 2016.

Dr. Simon Shiao is a versatile performer who holds the distinction of having performed at Carnegie Hall in three different capacities, as a recitalist and with both string quartet and orchestra.
Dr. Shiao has appeared around the world in concert, as well as on broadcasts of CNN's Science and Technology program and on Public Radio's Live on WGBH Radio. Highlights of his performances include concerts at the Museum of Oceanography in Monte Carlo, the U.S. Embassy in Vienna, the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum in Boston, and as soloist with the New World Symphony in Miami. He has also appeared at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, A Winter Festival in Jerusalem, and the Heidelberg Schloss Festspiele in Germany. As co-concertmaster of the New World Symphony, Dr. Shiao led that orchestra at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas and John Adams.Dr. Shiao currently performs with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and with the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra in Wyoming. At the University of North Florida he teaches violin and viola and is the Director of Orchestral Studies. He has adjudicated the Music Teachers' National Association Young Artist Competitions and the UNF String Competition, and has presented lecture-recitals and master classes at numerous universities and conservatories in the U.S., Belize, Taiwan, and China. Dr. Nick Curry is the Associate Professor of Cello at the University of North Florida. At UNF, he also serves as the coordinator of scholarships and admissions for the music department and is also the string area coordinator. He is a founding member of Trio Florida with violinist Simon Shiao and pianist Gary Smart, featuring new compositions as well as timeless classics. From 2004-2007, he served as the professor of cello and the cellist in the Rawlins Piano Trio at the University of South Dakota.He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, where he studied cello with David Starkweather from the University of Georgia. Nick received his Bachelor of Music from Vanderbilt, where he studied with Grace Mihi Bahng. While at Vanderbilt, he served as Professor Bahng’s teaching assistant and was the recipient of the Jean Keller Heard Award for Excellence in string performance. Nick then served as Hans Jorgen Jensen’s teaching assistant for five years at Northwestern University, where he earned his Master of Music and Doctoral degrees. He also was the teaching assistant to Professor Jensen at the Meadowmount School of Music for four summers. While at Northwestern, Nick performed as soloist with the Northwestern Philharmonic Orchestra and won the Northwestern Chamber Music Competition.Nick has played in master classes for Lynn Harrell, Ralph Kirschbaum, Paul Katz, David Geber, the Emerson String Quartet, the Pacifica String Quartet, and the Blair String Quartet. Private studies have also included lessons with Harvey Shapiro, David Finckel, and John Kochanowski. Nick has played concerts in Taiwan, Turkey, Africa, Spain, Italy, Slovenia, France, Austria and throughout the United States. He has presented in national conferences and is a sought after clinician, adjudicator and plans special projects for the state chapter of the American String Teachers Association.In April of 2006, he performed as a soloist on National Public Radio (USA) Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion on the King Amati (ca. 1538) cello. The performance was heard by over 4,000 people live and by approximately 4 million on radio and can be found on the Prairie Home Companion website archives.In the summers of 2012 and 2013 Dr. Curry was visiting faculty at the Meadowmount School of Music and was full-time faculty at the Tennessee Valley Music Festival.

Praised for her versatility and creativity, American violist Renate Falkner enjoys an active career as an orchestral and chamber musician, performing across the U.S. and abroad. Equally at home on both modern and baroque viola, she is a former member of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra and performs regularly with groups such as Boston Baroque, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra New England, and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. In Florida, she performs regularly with the Jacksonville Symphony and the Naples Philharmonic, as well as with Opera Tampa and the St. Petersburg Opera Company. As a chamber musician, she frequently collaborates with internationally renowned flutist Sergio Pallottelli in diverse chamber ensembles with guitar (Trio Tropicale) and harp (Anthos Trio and Trio Salzedo) and is a frequent guest artist with the Fontenay Chamber Players in NY, and the Westminster Trio in Baltimore. Renate has also performed alongside such artists as violinist Erick Friedman, violist Jesse Levine, harpist Rita Costanzi and oboist Joe Robinson. She has been heard in chamber collaborations in venues as diverse as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book Library, in orchestras at Carnegie Hall and Boston’s Jordan Hall, as well as such forums as the American Harp Society and the National Association of Composers, U.S.A.Summer appearances abroad have included the Verbier Festival, Switzerland, the Spoleto Festival, Italy, and a faculty appointment at the Carvalho Festival of Music in Fortaleza, Brazil. In the U.S., she has appeared or taught at the Quartz Mountain Music Festival, OK, Chautauqua Festival, NY, and the Weathersfiled Festival, VT. Currently, she is a member of the orchestra at the prestigious Bellingham Festival of Music in Washington state every summer. She has recorded for the Chandos, Nimbus and Rezound music labels. An accomplished educator, Dr. Falkner received her undergraduate training at the Oberlin College and Conservatory, earning degrees in both viola and Ancient Greek, studying with Roland Vamos. She completed her graduate studies at Yale University as a scholarship student of the late violist Jesse Levine. She has performed and given masterclasses and presentations at schools and universities throughout Florida, Valdosta State University (GA), Bowling Green State University (OH), Ball State University (IN), and the College of Wooster (OH). She is also a co-founder, along with her sister Dr. Annegret Falkner, of Project Left Brain/Right Brain, a new initiative designed to illuminate the complementary relationship between Music and the Brain through education integrating both S.T.E.M. fields and the Fine Arts. Most recently, she earned a doctoral degree in viola from the Florida State University, studying the viola music of English composer York Bowen. She currently serves as Prof. of Viola, Adjunct at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

Jason Lindsay is among the most versatile and in-demand bassists in Florida. His career has spanned the gamut from Touring with Tony-Winning Broadway productions to his critically acclaimed recordings for Klavier Records in Boca Raton.A graduate of Florida State University and the University of Miami, Lindsay earned the Doctorate of Musical Arts while studying with Lucas Drew in Miami. A former faculty member of the Suwanee Summer Music Center, South Carolina Governors School of the Arts, the New World School of the Arts, and the University of Miami, Lindsay has been an Artist for the past 11 seasons with the Palm Beach Chamber Music Festival, and is featured on five of their critically acclaimed CDs.

Melissa Barrett is the Associate Concertmaster of the Jacksonville Symphony. She holds degrees in violin performance from Michigan State University and the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with Walter Verdehr and Sylvia Rosenberg. Prior to her tenure with the Jacksonville Symphony, Melissa spent one season performing in the Savannah Symphony. She was also on the full time faculty at Sam Houston State University for five years, where she performed in the faculty piano trio and the Houston Grand Opera orchestra. She has performed in numerous summer festivals, including Aspen, Boulder, Lake George Opera, Sandpoint, Banff, and Sarasota. Melissa was a member of Chamber music Hilton head for eight seasons, and founded the Lantana Piano trio. Tenor Dr. James Hall joined the voice faculty at the University of North Florida in 2011. A graduate of Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and the Maryland Opera Studio, Hall enjoys an active and varied career that includes opera, oratorio, chamber music, and solo recital. A specialist in high tenor and haute-contre repertoire, Dr. Hall is frequently called upon as tenor soloist in Orff’s Carmina Burana. He has performed the work to rave reviews in some of the nation’s most prominent concert halls, including Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, Orlando’s Dr. Phillips Center, and Kansas City’s Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
Dr. Cara Tasher, soprano, has served as Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Voice at the University of North Florida since 2006. She has performed and recorded with conductors Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach, James Levine, Robert Shaw and Sir Georg Solti. As a singer, chorus master and/or conductor, Tasher has been professionally associated with the Atlanta Symphony Chorus, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Conspirare, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, Mexico City's Opera deBellas Artes, Portugal's Vocalizze Festival, Trinity Choir-Wall Street, Xavier University and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City. Proficient in several languages, Tasher's engagements as both a singer and a conductor have brought her to nearly ten states and twenty countries for concerts, festivals, workshops, or as a featured soloist. International awareness is a focal point of her teaching. Marilyn Smart's musical career has been both active and diverse. She has worked with such luminaries as Robert Shaw, Seiji Ozawa, and Dave Brubeck, and has sung in unique venues in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Smart’s singing has delighted audiences not only in public and university concert halls, but also in rural American schools, special cultural outreach venues in Japan, and even Eskimos villages in northern Alaska.Awarded a special citation by the Ford Foundation's Contemporary Music Project, she has long championed the work of contemporary composers and, with her husband, composer-pianist Gary Smart, is recognized for their performances of American art song. A former student of Margaret Harshaw, Josef Metternich, and Phyllis Curtin, Smart has taught at the University of Wyoming, Kobe College, and Osaka University. Since joining the faculty of UNF in 1999, she has performed as soloist with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, for the Friday Musicale, the St. Cecelia Society, and many other local musical organizations. Dr. Gary Smart's career has encompassed a wide range of activities as composer, classical and jazz pianist, and teacher. Always a musician with varied interests, he may be the only pianist to have studied with Yale scholar/keyboardist Ralph Kirkpatrick, the great Cuban virtuoso Jorge Bolet, and the master jazz pianist Oscar Peterson. A true American pluralist, Dr. Smart composes and improvises a music that reflects an abiding interest in Americana, jazz, and world musics, as well as the Western classical tradition.
Dr. Smart’s work has been supported by the Guggenheim Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Music Educator's National Conference, the Music Teacher's National Association, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Dr. Smart’s music has been performed in major venues in the U.S., including the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall, as well as venues in Europe and Asia. His "Concordia" for orchestra won the "Concordia Jazz Composition Award" and was premiered at Lincoln Center, New York.Dr. Smart’s "Song of the Holy Ground" for string quartet and piano won the "2008 John Donald Robb Musical Trust Composers’ Competition" and was premiered at the 2009 Robb Composers’ Symposium at the University of New Mexico. His compositions are published by Margun Music (G. Schirmer) and his work has been recorded on the Mastersound, Capstone and Albany labels. Several of his CDs have been released recently by Albany Records: "The Major’s Letter," songs for voice and piano, "American Beauty – a ragtime bouquet," "Hot Sonatas," third stream duo sonatas, "Turtle Dreams of Flight," third stream piano music, and “Blossoms”, a group of abstract, unedited solo piano improvisations which critics have praised as “truly a delightful concoction” and “protean music...utterly unique...defies categorization”. Dr. Smart has spent two residencies in Japan, teaching in programs at Osaka University and Kobe College. He has also taught in Indonesia as "Distinguished Lecturer in Jazz" under the auspices of the Fulbright program. From 1999-2003, he served as Chairman of the UNF Music Department (now the UNF School of Music).

Dr. Erin Bennett is Associate Professor of Piano and Pedagogy at the University of North Florida, where she teaches applied and class piano, piano accompanying, and coordinates the new degree program in Piano Pedagogy. During her summers she teaches piano and piano pedagogy at Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan.Prior to her appointment, Dr. Bennett served as the Interim Coordinator of Secondary Piano and Piano Pedagogy at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where she also taught piano through the University of Cincinnati’s Communiversity program. She has maintained private piano studios in Florida, Ohio, and Texas, and served as an adjunct instructor at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Michael Mastronicola serves on the faculty of the University of North Florida where he teaches Piano Pedagogy, Collaborative Piano, and Class and Applied Piano. He also serves as Organist/Choirmaster at All Saints Episcopal Church. He has taught previously at Jacksonville University and Front Range Community College. Since moving to Florida in 2010, he has distinguished himself as an artist and educator dedicated to musical outreach. Michael has served as chair of the annual Outstanding Young Pianists Competition at Friday Musicale since 2011, and was artist-coach at the Friday Musicale Emerging Young Artist Chamber Music Festival that same year. He serves frequently as adjudicator at various music competitions and festivals throughout Florida, and has conducted Multiple Piano Festivals in Colorado and Florida. His reviews have appeared in American Music Teacher. Dr. Mastronicola performs frequently as a solo and collaborative pianist, having performed in concerts throughout the United State and Europe. Recent appearances include solo and collaborative recitals at Flagler College, Jacksonville University, Friday Musicale, the Cummer Family Concert Series, and numerous other appearances throughout the area. He has presented workshops on music education in Jacksonville and, most recently, at the 2014 Florida State Music Educator's Conference in Tallahassee, where he was also asked to perform in a public recital, representing District IV. Mastronicola has been praised for his "expressive" and "intelligent, skilled" playing (Daily Camera). While serving as collaborative pianist and vocal coach in Opera Colorado's pre-professional program, he received the Harold A. Norblom Award for "outstanding dedication and exemplary community service."As a musician who serves his community, he organizes and leads a vibrant concert series at All Saints Episcopal Church that has attracted internationally-known artists and ensembles. He oversees a vibrant and growing music ministry for all ages there as well. He continues to serve numerous community organizations, including the American Guild of Organists and the Jacksonville-Area Music Teacher's Association, having served on the Steering Committee for the Florida State Music Educator's Conference in 2013. At the University of North Florida, he oversees the Piano Pedagogy Teaching Practicum, which pairs elementary-age piano students from the community with college piano pedagogy majors so they may gain valuable experience in a pre-professional setting. Lynne is Director of Music at St. Paul's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Jacksonville Beach as well as Program Coordinator and teacher at the First Coast Community Music School. She serves on the boards of the Beaches Fine Arts Series and BRASS, Beaches Residents Arising in Support of the Symphony. Performer, educator, composer, arranger, lecturer, and music education consultant, Bunky Green has 14 albums released in his name on vintage labels such as Chess, Exodus, Cadet, and Vanguard. As an international performer, educator, and lecturer, his European tours have taken him to Poland, Italy, Sicily, Sardinia, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, and Africa. Green received film credit for his background solo work in Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun," featuring Danny Glover and Esther Rolle. He is Past President and permanent chair of the Past Presidents Council of the world's largest jazz education organization, the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) and received a rare five-star rating from DownBeat Magazine for his album "Healing the Pain." Along with Gary Burton, Gerald Wilson, Jackie McLean, and Rufus Reid, he was cited in a 1995 DownBeat Magazine article recognizing the nation's leading jazz educators who are also respected players. In January of 1998, Professor Green was inducted into the "IAJE Hall of Fame." In 2003, he was inducted into the "Downbeat Hall of Fame for Jazz Education." Within the last three years Bunky Green has performed at major jazz festivals in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands. Leading European and American jazz magazines have highlighted him as one of the greatest jazz saxophonist on today's jazz scene. In April of 2010 his performance at the Jazz Standard in New York received a great review from Ben Ratliff in the New York Times. Ben also cited Bunky as being an innovator who has stylistically influenced many of today's great young players. Lynne Arriale has been critically praised as a pianist, composer, arranger and bandleader. Arriale was the first prize winner of the 1993 International Great American Jazz Piano Competition, and soon launched her
touring and recording career. Her 13 CDs as a leader have topped the Jazzweek Radio Charts; Inspiration and Arise reached #1 and Come Together #3, Nuance #4 and were included on numerous "Best Of" lists, including The New Yorkerand United Press International.
Todd DelGiudice grew up in South Florida and attended the University of Miami where he was one of the only freshmen in the school's history to make the Concert Jazz Band. During his time in Miami, Todd became a member of one of Red Rodney's last quintets. After studying with Gary Keller and Gary Campbell, Todd moved to NYC where he performed with Maria Schneider, John Fedchock, Donny Mccaslin, Ingrid Jensen, Jon Gordon, Rich Perry, Rick Margitza, and Scott Wendholt among others as well as leading his own groups at the Knitting Factory and other venues.
After completing a masters degree in Jazz Saxophone Performance from the University of Miami and a Masters of Clarinet Performance from the University of Oregon, Todd began his full time teaching career at Eastern Washington University while at the same time continuing his performing career. Uniquely talented on both saxophone and clarinet, Todd held the lead alto chair in the Bob Curnow Big Band at the same time that he held the 3rd and Bass Clarinet chair in the Spokane Symphony as well as leading his own groups throughout the Northwest. Todd's debut album "Pencil Sketches," released in 2011 on OA2 records received a rare Honorable Mention in the Village Voice in their 2011 Jazz Consumer's guide. Barry Greene began playing guitar in 1971, at the age of 10-years-old. Strongly influenced by Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, George Benson and Pat Martino, Barry has developed into a world-class guitarist, arranger and composer. Dr. Clarence Hines has performed throughout North America, Central America, and Europe, and has performed with musicians such as Slide Hampton, Bob Brookmeyer, Johnny Mathis, Josh Groban, the Temptations, the OJays, John Pizzarelli, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, the Harry James Orchestra, David Sanborn, Maceo Parker, and most recently with Diane Schuur. Dr. Hines has also performed on numerous occasions at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, the East Coast Jazz Festival, the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, and the Jacksonville Jazz Festival. Dr. Hines’ works have been premiered in the Distinguished Concerts International concert series at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the International Tuba-Euphonium Conference, the Midwest Clinic, the International Association for Jazz Education, the Festival Les Rendez-vous de l'Erdre in France, the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, and the Jacksonville Jazz Festival. Dr. Hines' music has been performed by top military and college jazz ensembles around the country. Prior to teaching at UNF, Dr. Hines coached combos and directed the Jazz Lab Band at the Eastman School of Music where he earned Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. Dr. Hines also served as a trombonist/paratrooper in the"All-American" band of the U.S. Army's famed 82nd Airborne Division and in the 79th Army Band in the Republic of Panamá prior to earning his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Florida. Dennis Marks, one of the most in-demand bass players on the jazz scene, has been playing with Arturo Sandoval for 13 years. In addition, he has performed with many of the great musicians of today, including Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Liebman, Bob Mintzer, Maynard Ferguson, and Pat Metheny. Dennis has appeared on Sandoval's last six recordings, including the Grammy-Award Winning "Hot-House." For one of the recordings, "My Passion for the Piano," he wrote two of the compositions.Marks has performed at almost every major jazz festival during the last several years, including the JVC Festival in New York, the Playboy Festival in L.A., and the North Sea Festival in Holland. In 1996, Marks recorded his debut album "Images" on the Fantasy/Contemporary label. This album, which contains all original compositions, has received much critical acclaim.Marks has been very active in the educational field, teaching at Florida International University for nine years and at the University of Miami for two. Bill Prince, a professor emeritus at the University of North Florida comes from a background rich in music. He has performed with numerous bands and orchestras including Buddy Rich, Billy Maxted, Pee Wee Hunt, the NORAD Band, the Denver, Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and Jacksonville Symphonies, and the American Wind Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with a number of well-known big bands including Xavier Cugat, Ray Anthony, Tex Beneke, Les and Larry Elgart, Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, and Louis Bellson. He has appeared on TV shows in the United States, Canada, Japan, the Philippines, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Ecuador. Bill has performed on over 70 albums including his "The Best Kept Secret in Jazz." He can currently be heard on Duffy Jackson’s CD, "Swing! Swing! Swing!," Buddy Rich’s CDs, "Mercy Mercy," and "The Best of Buddy Rich." In more recent years Bill has developed a cabaret show that he performs on cruise ships around the world. One of Bill's most unique talents is his ability to perform professionally on several instruments. For example, although he played trumpet with Buddy Rich, he was first offered a chair in the saxophone section. His performing instruments include trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, flute, clarinet, saxophone, piano, and electric bass. Bill produced his own CD, "Happy Thoughts," on which he composed, arranged and performed all parts. Bill holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree with a major in Theory and Composition from the University of Miami. He has taught at Florida Atlantic U, the U of Colorado/Denver, St. Francis Xavier U, Nova Scotia, the U of North Florida, and served as a visiting lecturer at Cape Town U and Natal U, South Africa. Music has taken him to all 50 states and 80 countries of this world. Bill has received Undergraduate Teaching and Outstanding Teaching Awards and student groups under his direction have twice won national Jazz Band competitions. He was also awarded first place in an IAJE Jazz Composition Contest. Bill’s compositions and arrangements have been performed and recorded by professional, college and university jazz ensembles throughout the United States and Canada. In 2000, his Concertino for Jazz and Legit Clarinets was recorded by the Warsaw (Poland) National Philharmonic and is available through ITunes and Ravello Records.

J.B. Scott earned his B.A. Degree in Music as the first graduate of the acclaimed jazz program at the University of North Florida, under the tutelage of the legendary Rich Matteson and faculty members Bunky Green, Dr. Bill Prince, Bruce Silva, and Jack Peterson.
While in college, Scott performed with several established groups that included the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, was a band member on the 1988 Japan Tour with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and performed regularly in the Walt Disney World theme parks. After graduating, he did a three year stint in New Orleans as the trumpeter and musical director of the world famous Dukes of Dixieland and was featured in the PBS special, "Salute to Jelly Roll Morton." In 1996, Scott earned his M.S. Degree in Music Ed. at Florida International University, where he studied with the legendary trumpeter, Arturo Sandoval. In addition to his collegiate big band performances, Scott performed professionally with the Mickey Finn Show and numerous Latin bands led by such legendary names as Eddie Palmieri, Paquito D'Rivera and Arturo Sandoval.
After teaching for a year in Orlando, Scott returned to the University of North Florida in 1996 to carry on the Rich Matteson 'old school swing' legacy, teaching trumpet, music history courses, and to direct the UNF Jazz Ensemble 1, one of the most respected, award-winning collegiate big bands in the country. He is currently an Assoc. Professor of Jazz Studies at UNF, is a member of and President elect of the State of Florida jazz organization, Florida Jazz Educators, is a member of JEN (Jazz Education Network,) of MENC, and of the Florida Band Masters Association. Scott was also a 20-year member of the International Association of Jazz Educators (serving for 6 years as the IAJE Florida Secretary).
As a soloist, Scott has performed on many festivals including the Macieo Jazz Festival, (Brazil), the Elkhart Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and many others. He has appeared with such notables as Nick Brignola, Ira Sullivan, Rufus Reed, and Ed Calle, to name just a few. Partnering with respected vocalist Lisa Kelly in 1997, Scott and Kelly have performed internationally for major festivals, jazz clubs, and jazz societies, as featured soloists with big bands and with their own big band and small groups. They are highly regarded adjudicators and guest artist/clinicians for secondary to collegiate music programs, competitions, and music camps. Scott has been featured on many TV and radio commercials, on CD recordings, and has co-released several successful CDs, including "Home" and "Keeping Out of Mischief" with the Swamp Dog Jazz Band, and "Memories of Tomorrow" and "Live at Simons" with Lisa Kelly. Scott is a YAMAHA artist/clinician. They are highly regarded adjudicators and guest artist/clinicians for secondary to collegiate music programs, competitions, and music camps.
Scott has performed and presented clinics for IAJE, FMEA/FMENC, Chicago Midwest, the 2010 inaugural JEN (Jazz Educators Network) in St. Louis, and was the 2009 Florida All-State Jazz Band Director for the annual FMEA/MENC Conference in Tampa, Florida. Dave Steinmeyer, trombone, spent 28 years as a musician in the United States Air Force, with 24 of those years playing lead trombone with the world famous Airmen of Note (the big band started by Glenn Miller) and the last 10 years of his tenure as the “Note’s” director. During his days with the “Note” the band traveled to Los Angeles three times a year to record albums with famous musicians including Sarah Vaughn, Joe Williams, Rosemary Clooney, Frank Sinatra, Patrick Williams, J.J. Johnson, Lou Rawls and Diane Schuur. Dave has appeared as a performer and clinician at most of the major universities in the United States, and he has performed for 8 United States Presidents. Dave has been a featured artist at the Sydney Opera House in Australia, the Kennedy Center, the White House, and has appeared on numerous television productions and studio projects. In addition to receiving the Lowell Mason Award for Education, Dave is an Adjunct Professor of Applied Trombone at the University of North Florida School of Music in Jacksonville.

Michael Emmert, a native of Jacksonville, FL, began his dedicated study of music as a high school student at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. During this time, Michael was exposed to a wide variety of musical genres and engagements, like performing with winning ensemble of the 2006 Essentially Ellington Festival competition hosted by Jazz at Lincoln Center and featured in the documentary, CHOPS. The foundation of those events led Michael to continue his study of music at the University of North Florida under the tutelage of jazz master, Bunky Green. As a member several performing ensembles in the school, including UNF’s JE1, Michael performed with artists Joe Lovano, Maria Schneider, Dave Douglas, Kurt Elling and many more. In addition to his studies at UNF, Michael was selected to perform with the 2009 Disneyland All-American College Band under the direction of Dr. Ron McCurdy. Michael continued his education, pursuing his master’s degree at William Paterson University and studied privately with Rich Perry and Vincent Herring.
In addition to school related studies, Michael has studied saxophone, flute, clarinet and composition privately with Rhonda Cassano, Dr. Karen Demsey, Laura Dwyer, Dr. Guy Yehuda, Chris Cullen, Dr. Ed Joffe, Bob Sheppard, Sal Lozano, Andy Lamy, Dr. Michael Bovenzi, John Ricci and Dr. Clarence Hines. As an educator, Michael has taught as an adjunct with the University of North Florida’s School of Music since 2016, privately for over 8 years and given masterclasses throughout the Southeast United States. Through his performing career, Michael has performed at many venues/events, including the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, B.B Kings Club in NYC, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Lincoln Center, the Savannah Jazz Festival and more. Sarah Caissie Provost received her Ph.D. from Brandeis University and a Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance from the University of Hartford, where she studied with John Wion. Previously, she taught at Clark University in Worcester, MA.
Dr. Provost’s research focuses on 1930s jazz music and dance, with particular interest in issues of race and gender. She recently presented a paper on Mary Lou Williams at the annual conference of the Society for American Music, and has also presented papers at Music and the Moving Image (New York University), the American Musicological Society (New England chapter), “Alive By Her Own Hand:” Women Composers as Performers of Their Own Work (Brandeis University), and the Guelph International Jazz Festival Colloquium. Her dissertation is titled “Benny Goodman’s 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert.”

Dr. Timothy J. Groulx is Assistant Professor of Music Education at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida. A native of Punta Gorda, Florida, he earned his Ph.D. in music education from the University of South Florida in 2010 where he was recipient of the Presidential Fellowship, and earned his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music in Teaching from Oberlin Conservatory in 1999.He is active in the music education community as an adjudicator, guest conductor and clinician. Prior to coming to UNF, he was Assistant Professor and music education degree coordinator at the University of Evansville in Evansville, Indiana from 2010-2014 where he also established the University of Evansville Summer Music Camp, serving hundreds of students each year. He was teaching fellow at the University of South Florida from 2006-2010, and from 1999-2010 he taught band and orchestra programs in central Ohio and in the Tampa Bay area of Florida.Dr. Groulx has published research in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Journal of Historical Research in Music Education, Music Education Research International and Update!, and serves on the advisory committee for the Music Educators Journal. He has presented clinics at Midwest, NAfME National In-Service Conference, and at state MEAs in Florida and Indiana. He has presented his research at the College Music Society National Conference, NAfME National Research Conference, NAfME’s History Special Research Interest Group Symposia, The Suncoast Music Education Research Symposia and many others throughout the country.

Scott Swan’s multidisciplinary life reflects his interdisciplinary experiences in both academia and in music. Growing up in rural Maine in the 1960s and 1970s in a family of lumberjacks, Scott developed an early appreciation for the unifying expressive elements of everyday life among local peoples and groups. His musical roots extend back to his youth in western Maine, where - in the mid-to late 1970s, he studied the local folk music traditions of Maine, as well as the larger regional musics of New England, the Maritime Provinces of Canada, and Quebec. He expressed this interest as a folk guitarist/singer at regional music festivals throughout New England, performing with artists such as Pete Seeger, Noel Paul Stookey, Arlo Guthrie, and Dave Mallet. Throughout the 1980s, as a member of the USAF, Scott was assigned to the National Security Agency, where he worked as a linguist and translator in various Southeast Asian languages. During that period, he traveled extensively and intensively in central and northern Thailand, studying and recording the local music practices of different ethnic groups. He also continued to perform at folk music festivals in Maryland and Virgina, and he expanded his study of different musical genres including Jazz and various genres of guitar finger styles, culminating in studying and working with the late Danny Gatton. At the University of Florida, Scott earned a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, focusing on Bio-Archaeology and Biological Anthropology. He was the first-chair guitarist for the University of Florida Jazz Band and had the opportunity to greatly expand his understanding of Jazz improvisation through individual lessons with trumpeter and (then) band director Gary Langford. It was in Gainesville that he met and began performing with the Soul and Funk artist Lavell Kamma, who would later become the subject of his Master’s thesis at Florida State University. He also worked as an “on-call” guitarist for local performances by the late Rock & Roll pioneer Bo Diddley, who lived in nearby Archer Florida. Scott followed up on his interest in Jazz with post-Bac studies at the University of North Florida, working with both Jack Peterson and Barry Greene. In addition, he studied privately with local Jazz guitarist Gary Starling. Scott continued performing with Lavell Kamma, through whom he was inspired to study the history of Southern Soul music, as well as other genres of African American music. Scott’s research resulted in his Master’s thesis, which – through the lens of Lavell Kamma’s life story - chronicles the role and influence of African American music in the transition from segregation to desegregation. He earned his Master’s in Anthropology from Florida State University (FSU) in 2003.From 2003 – 2010, Scott taught various Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate classes in the Social Studies Department at the nationally-ranked Stanton College Preparatory High School in Jacksonville, Florida, all the while continuing to perform throughout the Southeastern US with the Lavell Kamma Band until 2007. He left teaching in 2010 and - in 2011 - he began doctoral studies in Ethnomusicology at Florida State University. Currently a PhD candidate at FSU, Scott recently completed two years of field research in the foothills of the Pyrenees of southern France, where he lived and worked with various local vocal groups who perform multipart polyphonic music in French, Occitan, and Catalan. While in France, he continued to perform as a busker – or street performer- at local markets and festivals, meeting and playing with musicians from across Europe, as well as from North and West Africa.

Kolanda Douglas joined the School of Music in September 2016. She has a Master of Science in Mass Media Arts and Journalism from Clarion University and a Bachelor of Science in Communication from UNF. As Marketing Coordinator, Douglas is responsible for marketing/advertising, publishing and design, and donor/patron engagement. Douglas' combination of practical work expereince and solid educational background in Journalism and Communication has equipped her to assist with marketing the School's degree programs, students and events. Douglas is also active in the UNF community through her membership in GenuinelyU and the African American Faculty and Staff Association (AAFSA) as the Communication and Technology Committee Chair. Additionally, she is an award-winning public speaker and certified life coach.

Lois Scott has been with the UNF School of Music for more than 20 years (since 1988) and continues to stay active in the UNF community through her memberships in UNF’s Staff Affairs Committee and the Bookstore Advisory Council. Prior to her employment at UNF Scott worked for the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, the Duval County School Board, and the City of Jacksonville. As Office Manager, Scott works closely with the Chair and faculty members in UNF’s School of Music, as well as administrators in various offices throughout the UNF campus. Scott manages a variety of tasks including, but not limited to scheduling, contracting, and budgeting. In addition, Scott provides advising services for music students and enjoys giving them the best assistance possible.

Ikesha graduated cume laude from UNF in 2016 with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance for Percussion. During her music education she has attended Lavilla School of the Arts (middle) and Douglas Anderson School of the Arts (high) before enrolling in UNF in 2012. She has studied with the renowned percussionists Kevin Garry (current percussion professor for UNF and present member of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra) and Charlotte Mabrey (Emerita percussion professor for UNF and former principle percussionist for the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra). After working four years as an Event Services Associate and Senior Reservations Assistant for the Student Union Administration Office, Ikesha began working part-time for the music office in 2015. By 2016 Ikesha began working full-time as the Administrative Secretary for the School of Music.
