August 2012 CCEC Faculty & Staff Highlights

Dr. Adel El Safty serves as the faculty advisor in the annual Precast Concrete Institute Big Beam Design Contest. Civil Engineering students Andrew Isildar, Matthew Graeff and Adam Dooley were quite successful in their concrete beam design. They won first place in Zone 6 beating other university teams such as: University of South Florida, University of Arkansas - Fayetteville, North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina - Charlotte, University of Florida, University of Tennessee, Georgia Institute of Technology, Florida International University, University of Central Florida, and other schools in the zone/region.


The UNF student team went on to place 4th in the nation beating, Lehigh University, California State University, Chico, and University of Western Ontario among others.

The Gate Precast Company sponsored the student team and fabricated the beam designed by the students. Tim Morgan, UNF civil engineering graduate, assisted with the beam testing.



The School of Computing is pleased to announce that Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE), the international computing sciences honor society, awarded academic scholarships of $1000 each to Deepa Komathukattil, a graduate student, and Evgeniva Bell, an undergraduate student.  Twenty six scholarships were awarded to applicants who applied from the two hundred sixty chapters worldwide. Dr. Robert Roggio serves as the UPE faculty advisor.



The 2012 School of Computing TLO Summer Internship is a community-based learning opportunity for students. Students apply the knowledge and techniques they have learned in the classroom to help local community partners to develop a website for their organization. Students participating in the TLO program received scholarship award of $1000. This program is managed by Dr. Ching-Hua Chuan and Dr. Karthikeyan Umapathy. This program is funded by TLO funds from UNF Undergraduate Studies Office.

On August 6, 2012, TLO interns presented website developed for their clients. Student presentations and website was assessed by three panel judges. Judges were Matt Stueck (CTO, ICS), Jen Hyde (Owner & CEO of Acqylla Public Relations & Communications and Communications Assistant for the Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida), and Ms. Lisa Jamba (Senior Instructor, School of Computing, UNF).

Please join in welcoming Mr. Walt Schuller to the CCEC Research Technology Services staff. Mr. Schuller is joining us with considerable experience in industry as an electrical engineer, broadcast engineer, network administrator, and systems administrator. Mr. Schuller has also served over 16 years as an adjunct in the School of Computing, teaching courses such as introduction to computer hardware, computer architecture, network and distributed processing. Mr. Schuller will be serving primarily in the School of Computing  as a technical specialist in Linux.
