Dr. Peter Bacopoulos, Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering (Coastal)

Dr. David Lambert (BCM) and Dr. Pat Welsh (SoE) recently received a $5,000 grant from NOAA for the "Development of a Real-time, Location-based Learning System Model for RABOB in GTMNERR". The EMMAPS Lab team, which includes Mr. Terry Smith (RTS) and Mr. Robert Richardson (RTS), will be developing and evaluating an innovative STEM education approach that will leverage the real-time data from the team's water quality buoys. Partners in the project include the St. Johns County Water Quality Science Academy and the Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association (SECOORA).

UNF School of Engineering, African American Faculty & Staff
Association (AAFSA), and the African American Student Union (AASU)
hosted during June – July, five weeks of “Crossing Bridges” for Team Up summer 4th - 8th grade campus visits. Team Up is an association through The Bridge of Northeast Florida and is the leading dropout prevention organization helping kids successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life. UNF's "Crossing Bridges" facilitated over 300 Team Up students with activities about science, math, and engineering, exercise and physical fitness, as well as nutrition and healthy eating habits and body image. Ms. Kathie Carswell, SoE Outreach Coordinator, served as the UNF focal point for this program.
The School of Engineering in conjunction with the UNF National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Chapter and Mentoring Families and Kids, Inc. / National Society of Black Engineers Jr. Chapter, a local non-profit organization hosted their first Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Conference on Friday, 13 July 2012 at the Student Union. The conference was aimed at introducing 150 elementary and middle school students (specifically 3rd through 8th graders) to educational and career opportunities in STEM fields. The conference was a one-day event with hands-on workshops, robotics and Rubik’s cube activities facilitated by members from the Jacksonville Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast (NAVFAC) and the School of Engineering mechanical and electrical engineering students. Ms. Kathie Carswell, SoE Outreach Coordinator, also
served as the UNF focal point for this program.
Dr. Ken Martin has been selected to Chair a Computing Accreditation Commission/ABET accreditation visit to evaluate a computer science program at a U.S. university. He has also been selected to be a Member of a CAC/ABET accreditation visit to evaluate two information systems' programs at a Southeast Asian university.
Dr. Charles Winton, an invited attendee to the July 2012 Global Conference on Educational Robotics, was appointed President for KISS Institute for Practical Robotics beginning 2013.
Dr. Robert Roggio, Tetiana Bilyayevaand, James R. Comer presented and published their paper, “Everyday Cloud Computing with SaaS”, at the 2012 Software Engineering Research and Practice Conference, July 2012.
