elsafty_2012_prestressedbigbeamdesign_team_400x200Civil Engineering students won big in the “Big Beam” design contest sponsored by the Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) and SIKA Corporation. Two Prestressed Concrete Beams were designed by UNF Civil Engineering students: Andrew Isildar, Matthew Graeff, Adam Dooley, Fernando Paredes, Hugo Lerma, and Gregory Spelios.  Tom Newton of Gate Precast Company, Jacksonville, FL, fabricated the beams and donated them to UNF. The beams were tested in the UNF lab and test results were forwarded to PCI headquarters for competition evaluation.  UNF won first place in zone 6 and ranked fourth overall in the national competition.  Dr. Adel El Safty served as the faculty advisor for this event.  View the UNF 2012 Big Beam Competition video online.
