November 2011 CCEC Faculty & Staff Highlights

  • Dr. Roberto Soares arranged for two guest presentations in BCN 4709 Construction Management Project Capstone:
    • Ms. Denise Ramsey, Haskell Architects & Engineers Vice President, spoke on Design-Build Construction Projects in Jacksonville and the challenge of managing 200+ contractors.
    • Dr. Michael P. Whelan, Taylor Engineering Assistant Director of the Waterfront Group, Taylor Engineering, spoke on construction processes such as risk assessment, logistics, project management and change orders.
     
  • The School of Engineering has a community outreach program designed to interest middle school and high school students in engineering. Recent activities include:
    • Yulee High School – Ms. Kathie Carswell, SoE Outreach Coordinator, met with, Guidance Counselor, Amy Grunewald, to coordinate outreach activities to 6th-8th grade girls, Oct 21.
    • Arlington Middle School - Dr. Murat Tiryakioglu, Ms. Kathie Carswell and engineering students Mark McCombs and Bill Carlson visited Arlington Middle School, Nov. 10.
    • Jean Ribault High School - Dr. Murat Tiryakioglu, Dr. Chris Brown and Ms. Kathie Carswell spoke to ~45 students on UNF Engineering, Nov. 14.
     

  • Dr. Chris Brown published his paper, “Graphical Planning Envelopes for Estimating the Surface Footprint of CO2 Plumes during CO2 Injection into Saline Aquifers”, in Natural Resources Research, 20(4). Also, Dr. Brown, B. Poiencot and C. Sornberger published their paper “, Planning, Designing, Operating and Regulating a Geologic Sequestration Repository as an Underground Landfill - A Review”, in the Journal of the Air and Waste Management Association, 61(12), 1-13.

  • Jeffrey Lam and Dr. Susan Vasana published their paper, “Noise Filtering of Physiological Signals Using Wavelet Analysis”, in the Proceedings of Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering (CBB & BEB) Conference at World Conference on Engineering and Technology (CET2011), October, 2011.

  • Dr. Pat Welsh presented a poster on Hurricane Charley, “How fast can waves grow?”, at the 12th International Workshop on Wave Hindcasting and Forecasting and the 3rd Coastal Hazards Symposium in Kona, HI, October 30 to 4 November, 2011. Dr. Welsh also gave an invited presentation, “The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and Florida Rainfall”, to the St Johns River Water Management District Clay-Putnam Minimum Flows and Levels Prevention and Recovery Strategy Development Technical Working Group, November 17, 2011.

  • Dr. Sanjay Ahuja and Alan Rolli published their paper, “Survey of the State-of-the-Art of Cloud Computing”, in the International Journal of Cloud Applications and Computing (IJCAC), Volume 1, Issue 4, October – December 2011. 

  • Dr. Jerry Merckel gave an invited presentation, “Keys To Success”, to a Florida State College communications class, Nov. 15, 2011.
