Dr. Asaithambi was born and brought up in the city of Madras, India. He received his Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) degree in Electrical Engineering in 1977 and Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Computer Science in 1980, both from the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1985. Since then he has held academic positions in several higher educational institutions in the United States. His most recent position as Chair of the Department of Computer Science has been with The University of South Dakota. His teaching portfolio includes mathematically intensive computing courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. His research interests are in the areas of computational science, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing. Asaithambi has published a textbook entitled Numerical Analysis: Theory and Practice (1995), and over 35 research articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has made numerous presentations at regional, national, and international conferences, and directed several doctoral dissertations and Master's theses in computing. Additionally, he is interested in broadening participation in computing by populations, including women, who are currently under-represented in computing.
