School of Computing Senior Project Code Review Sessions
On March 11th and March 13th 2014, RJ McDermott, Mike Potts, Tracy Potts, Danan Hudson, and Jim Mackin, software engineers from feature conducted code reviews sessions in the IS Senior Project and Mobile Capstone courses. They reviewed all seven student teams project source code and offered feedback to improve their product performance. As a part of the course, students are developing software products for following local non-profit organizations: DLC Nurse & Learn, UNF Library, Trinity Rescue Mission, ACE Empowerment, World Arts Education, and Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

A team from UNF's EMMAPS Lab, including Dr. J. David Lambert (Construction Management), Terry L. Smith (Research Technology Services), and David King (Computing graduate student) along with Larry Treadaway (UF), led the "Rain Watching 101" S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activity for Timucuan Adventure Day at the Fort Caroline National Memorial on 01 February 2014. Children and adults were trained on how to make and report accurate rainfall observations as part of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow (CoCoRaHS) Network. CoCoRaHS is a
grassroots, non-profit, community-based, precipitation-monitoring network of volunteers who take daily measurements of precipitation in their own backyards. Over 130 children and adults participated in this citizen science event.

Dr. Joachim Hornegger of Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, will present "Applications of Image Registration to Medical Imaging" to the UNF School of Computing in Building 15, Room 3120 at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, 14 August 2013.
This talk will present recent results on fusion and registration for medical imaging. Concepts for the incorporation of prior knowledge are considered as well as the usage of image registration technologies for motion compensated reconstruction as it is required for cardiac imaging.

UNF Engineering Students Win at PCI Big Beam Contest

The University of North Florida student Civil Engineering teams were selected as the regional winners (1st and 2nd) of the 2013 Engineering Student Design Award, also known as the Big Beam Contest, by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI). The team also placed sixth in the national competition, coming home with a grand total of $1,250 in award monies, provided by the SIKA Corporation and PCI.

The 44th IEEE Southeastern Symposium on System Theory conference will be held on the campus of the University of North Florida on March 11-13, 2012. The conference is jointly organized by the electrical engineering faculty of the University of North Florida and Florida International University. The conference is a regular forum for university faculty and researchers to exchange ideas in the areas of system science and engineering, controls, power systems, communications and other closely related fields. The research papers submitted to the conference are subjected to peer reviews. The accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings and will be included into the IEEE Xplore.

The CCEC Employer Showcase, held on Tuesday, 04 October 2011, from noon until 4 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom (Bldg. 58W, 3rd floor), is a career fair geared exclusively toward students in the fields of computing, engineering and construction who are looking for internships, co-ops or full-time jobs. One of the University of North Florida’s most high-profile, recent faculty hirings has been Dr. Don Resio, a seasoned engineering and oceanography researcher who will serve as director of the Taylor Engineering Research Institute. Maritime Container Converted to Computer Lab for Dominican Republic School
The Department of Construction Management (CM) has initiated a program to modify and recycle maritime shipping containers for habitat use. CM students gain "real world" construction experience in modifying one of these cargo containers as a computer laboratory for an elementary school in the Dominican Republic.

Dr. Don Resio
joins the UNF faculty as Director of the the Taylor Engineering Research Institute (TERI) and Professor of Ocean Engineering. Dr. Resio has served in a number of important roles, including the Senior Technologist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Coastal and Hydraulics Lab and the U.S. delegate to the United Nations Joint World Meteorological Organization’s Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology. In his new role at UNF, Dr. Resio expects to continue his research activities, develop the curriculum for a degree program in Coastal and Estuarine Engineering, and build a world-class team of faculty to develop innovative solutions for those of us living in coastal and estuarine areas.
Dr. Asai Asaithambi joins UNF as the Director of the School of Computing
Dr. Asai Asaithambi
joins UNF as the Director of the School of Computing. He comes to us from the University of South Dakota, where he served as the Chair of the Department of Computer Science. Dr. Asaithambi's teaching portfolio includes mathematically intensive computing courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, and his research interests are in computational science, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing. Dr. Asaithambi has also expressed a keen interest in broadening the participation in the computing field by under-represented populations, including women.
