Dr. Lev Gasparov, a professor in the Department of Physics at the University of North Florida, has been selected as the recipient of the Terry Presidential Professorship.
This professorship was designed in honor of UNF President John Delaney to recognize faculty achievements through the support of outstanding scholars. Gasparov joins Drs. Greg Ahearn, Andy Buchwalter, David Courtwright, Tom Pekarek and Gary Smart as the University’s sixth presidential professor.
“Lev is an accomplished member of our Physics Department and will bring further luster to the ranks of our presidential professors through what I am confident will be an ongoing record of significant research,” said Dr. Mark Workman, UNF provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.
Gasparov, a Southside resident, will receive a $7,500 stipend for the professorship and one course release each academic year. The professorship, effective in July, carries a full-term appointment of three years. Financial support for this award was established through the generosity and support of the Mary Virginia Terry family.
A UNF faculty member since 1999, Gasparov’s areas of expertise include condensed matter physics and optical spectroscopy. He has received $1.3 million in external funding for research projects since 2000 from organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. He’s also obtained five patents since 2007.
Gasparov has had numerous scholarly articles published and has received several awards, including the UNF Faculty Fellow Award, UNF Outstanding Faculty Scholarship Award, UNF Proposal Development Award and the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Leadership Council Award, to name a few.
He has also mentored a number of undergraduate research students in the course of his UNF career, with several of them receiving honors for outstanding research in physics. As a member of the American Physical Society, Gasparov earned his doctorate from the Institute for Solid State Physics in Chernogolovka, Russia, and received both his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys.
UNF, a nationally ranked university located on an environmentally beautiful campus, offers students who are dedicated to enriching the lives of others the opportunity to build their own futures through a well-rounded education.
