The University of North Florida’s Child Development Research Center will host its 10th annual Family Fest from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at UNF’s Wildlife Sanctuary, near the nature trails located at the main campus entrance at Interstate 295. This event is free and open to the public.

Family Fest strives to combine the efforts of the Child Development Research Center staff, Wildlife Sanctuary staff, as well as UNF faculty and students to reach out to the Jacksonville community in support of literacy development. This event will bring to life storytelling, music, as well as arts and crafts in a natural setting, providing Jacksonville families with a fun and affordable celebration of literacy in the outdoors.

Throughout the day, there will be 14 art-infused literacy activities, such as seed mosaics, rainbow fish, paper bag animal puppets and more. Other fun activities will include piñata smashing, a petting zoo, walking on nature trails and canoeing. Lunch will also be available.

Dr. Nile Stanley, a UNF associate professor of childhood education, will present poetry in motion. He is a featured storyteller, aka Nile Crocodile, for the Jacksonville Public Library and has authored several books, including “Literacy through Storytelling” and “Creating Readers with Poetry.” Dr. Gigi David, a UNF assistant professor of childhood education and children’s author, will interact with kids and discuss her books. David has several published books for children, including poetry, early reader books and picture books. Her latest book, “Just Mollie and Me,” helps children value relationships with elderly people living in their community.
