The Associated Collegiate Press has named the Spinnaker, the University of North Florida’s weekly student-operated campus newspaper, as a finalist for the 2012 Pacemaker Award, which has been awarded over the past 85 years.
This is the second time the Spinnaker has been a finalist for the award, often referred to as the Pulitzer Prize for college journalism. The newspaper was both a finalist and winner in 2010. This year’s winners will be announced at the National College Media Convention in Chicago Nov. 3.
The Spinnaker is one of 25 finalists in the four-year non-daily category. Other finalists include newspapers at Florida State, the University of Missouri (Columbia), Auburn and Georgetown. The category has grown as both digital media and economics have driven some of the strongest college newspapers in the country to shift from daily to non-daily delivery.
“The staff is rightfully proud to stand among that company again,” said John Timpe, Spinnaker adviser and assistant director in UNF’s Center for Student Media. Greg Parlier and Chance Ryan, who both graduated from UNF’s Department of Communication last year, were the editors for the 2011-12 Spinnaker.
The staff of the Sacramento Bee judged this year’s entries. Staff evaluated entrants on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, layout and design, as well as photography, art and graphics.
In addition to being named a Pacemaker Award finalist,
the Spinnaker placed second as the best college newspaper in the state from the Florida College Press Association in May.
UNF’s first student newspaper started in January 1974 and was called the Halyard, which was later renamed Campus Up-Date in 1976. On August 17, 1977, the student newspaper was dubbed, The Spinnaker, the same name it has held for more than 30 years.
