The Spinnaker, the University of North Florida’s weekly student-operated newspaper, garnered several awards from the Florida College Press Association, finishing second place as best college newspaper in the state. The final results were just released this week.
The awards are part of the Society for Professional Journalists’ Sunshine State Awards for both professional and college media. The Spinnaker brought home a first-place award in addition to three second-place awards and one award for third place.
Greg Parlier graduated from UNF last month and won first place in the News Story category for his article on textbook legislation. He served as Spinnaker editor-in-chief last spring. Tim Bee, who graduated last fall, won the second-place award for Best Sports Column. He served as the paper’s sports editor last fall.
The Spinnaker also finished second as the Best College Newspaper in the state as well as second in Front Page Design. UNF senior Matt Head received third place in the News Story category for his article on Student Government presidential salaries. Head serves as a daily news editor for the Spinnaker and is the former Osprey TV station manager.
“Greg’s award is a case of other journalists seeing what we see: He’s a smart, thoughtful reporter and writer. His honor—along with the second-place and third-place recognition for other members of the Center for Student Media—confirms that last year was a strong year,” said John Timpe, UNF student media adviser.
These recent honors aren’t the first the college paper has received from the Florida College Press Association. The paper won Best News Photo and Best Features Photo in 2010-11 and Best General News Writing and Best Front Page Design in 2008-09. Additionally, the Spinnaker
won the 2010 Pacemaker award, the Associated Collegiate Press’ highest honor, for the first time.
UNF’s first student newspaper started in January 1974 and was called the Halyard, which was later renamed Campus Up-Date in 1976. On August 17, 1977, the student newspaper was dubbed the Spinnaker, the same name it has held for more than 30 years.
