Mayor Alvin Brown will endorse the first Jacksonville Money Wise Week as honorary chair at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 11, during a press conference downtown at the
Jacksonville Branch of the Federal Reserve.
The First Annual Jacksonville Money Wise week, sponsored by the Employ Florida Banner Center for Financial & Professional Services at the University of North Florida, is a public-private community partnership, offering a series of free financial classes and events designed to help Jacksonville citizens better manage their personal finances. Course offerings include mortgage application, retirement preparation, financial education for youth and more.
The public awareness campaign, projected to be Monday, May 7, through Friday, May 11, is a coordinated effort of the City of Jacksonville, Bank of America/Merrill Lynch, University of North Florida, Jacksonville University and Family Foundations, all working together to promote personal financial literacy in Jacksonville. Originally named Money Smart Week, the program first kicked off in Chicago in 2002, but its model quickly spread throughout the Midwest.
Attending the press conference will be Bob Wood, dean, UNF’s Division of Continuing Education; Dr. Donnie Horner, education commissioner, City of Jacksonville; Greg Smith, Northeast Florida president, Bank of America; Dr. Kerry Romesburg, president, Jacksonville University; Glenn Hansen, vice chairperson, Financial & Professional Services Banner Center and voluntary chairperson for Money Wise Week; and Dawn Lockhart, president, Family Foundations.
