The National Council for International Visitors President Sherry Mueller will discuss the “Impact of Citizen Diplomacy and Smart Power” at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, at Fleet Landing.
The Fleet Landing lecture will be hosted by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in the Division of Continuing Education at the University of North Florida and preludes the first phase of curriculum overview for the first-ever Citizen Diplomacy Certification Program to be offered in the U.S.
Citizen Diplomacy is a national initiative to help increase globalization by promoting intercultural understanding and mutual respect between U.S. and foreign-national citizens. Mueller, who frequents Jacksonville as an expert in international education and grassroots diplomacy, will be instrumental in helping UNF’s Continuing Education and Global Jax develop the certification program. The course will be designed for professionals and volunteers who interact in an international arena and wish to redefine the global worldview.
In the past 20 years, Citizen Diplomacy has allowed emerging professional and volunteer leaders in Northeast Florida the opportunity to host more than 2,000 select international visitors from over 160 countries. The concept is critical in the wake of an era of global misunderstanding, unveiling commonalities and shared struggles from country-to-country, including: women’s rights, infectious diseases, domestic violence, public health, organized crime and more.
This national initiative helps customize three-week itineraries that expose visitors to the customs and founding principles of America; unveiling how Americans truly live, conduct business and deal politically, culturally and socially. The unifying event appeals to all citizens to break down international barriers and help shape U.S. foreign relationships ‘one handshake at a time.’
This lecture is free and open to the public; however, registration is required. For more information or to register, contact the University of North Florida Division of Continuing Education at email@example.com or call (904) 620-4200.
