The University of North Florida’s Us Group, along with UNF’s Brooks College of Health and the Mayo Clinic, will feature Dr. Mary O’Connor, world-renowned orthopedic surgeon and chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Florida, at its annual educational luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, at the UNF University Center. She will discuss “Lifelong Bone Health: Girls to Grannies.” Check-in and registration begins at 10:45 a.m.

O’Connor, a Southside resident, has forged a career as an internationally acclaimed orthopedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement and bone and soft tissue tumor surgery. Nominated as a Local Legend by Rep. Ander Crenshaw, she began her career as a resident at the famed Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, followed by a fellowship in bone and soft tissue tumor surgery, also at Mayo.

She was the first woman accepted into the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society in 1993, a specialty society of the American Association of Orthopedic Surgery devoted to the treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors, and in 2005, she was the first woman to be elected president of the Society. Additionally, she was the first female member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and chair of the Women’s Health Issues Committee of the American Association of Orthopedic Surgery.

Widely published in her specialty, O’Connor has served as a guest editor of the Journal of Arthroplasty and the Florida Orthopedic Journal. In 2005, she received the Clinician of the Year award from the Mayo Clinic, given in recognition by her fellow physicians here in Jacksonville. “To be recognized by your peers means a lot,” she said. “I’ve been blessed and rewarded every day in my work. I try to give my patients the absolute best I can.”

She serves on the boards of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society, the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons, the Florida Orthopedic Society and the Northeast Florida Orthopedic Society.

This is the eighth annual women’s health event sponsored by the Us Group, a volunteer organization promoting health for Jacksonville’s women and girls through special initiatives, which supports the UNF Brooks College of Health.
