(Jacksonville, FL) – The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, a cultural resource of the University of North Florida, will host a free educational symposium from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at the University Center on-campus about the history of American chair design, the artists’ production process and how collectors appraise, evaluate and restore museum quality chairs. The symposium will feature an international television personality and author of more than 100 books, scholars of American furniture design, innovative artists and professional chair designers and manufacturers.
Sponsored by Ken Klein and Florida Financial Group, this symposium supports “The Art of Seating: 200 Years of American Design” exhibition, highlighting the history and innovation of American chair design, running through April 3 at MOCA Jacksonville. Among the featured speakers are Dr. Diane DeMell Jacobsen, collector; Judith Miller, author of “Chairs;” Benjamin Pardo, director of design for Knoll; Andrew VanStyn, director of acquisitions, conservation and photography; and artist/designers including Vivian Beer, Jon Brooks and Dolf James. Dr. Elizabeth Heuer, assistant professor of art history from UNF, will serve as a symposium moderator.
“MOCA is excited to be bringing renowned experts to UNF’s campus to showcase why American chairs are truly unique works of art and what they say about the history of American design,” said Allison Galloway, museum educator and director of public programs, “This exhibition is a great cross representation of the scholastic, artistic and curatorial aspects of the applied arts.”
