The University of North Florida men’s golf team carded a final round 298 Sunday finishing tied with Missouri for seventh at the season-opening Wolf Run Intercollegiate.
The Ospreys posted a tournament total 888 (+36) over the 54-hole event hosted by Indiana University at the par 71, 6,805-yard Wolf Run Golf Club.
Sophomore Kevin Phelan paced UNF earning a fifth-place finish with a tournament score 215 (+2) including a round of even par on the final day. Phelan played consistently all weekend posting rounds of 72, 72 and 71.
“It was great playing by Kevin,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “This is a very good start for him as an individual. The team result was not real good. We expect to compete to win and we made way too many mistakes to be able to do that. We will now get ready for our next event in a couple weeks.”
Junior Kevin Aylwin was the only other Osprey in the Top 25 posting a tie for 23rd at 223 (73-75-75). Senior Chris Kennedy (74-79-75=228) and junior Joe Byun (79-72-77=228) finished tied for 47th while junior Major Forbess was tied for 69th at 234 (80-73-81) in rounding out the UNF lineup.
Illinois captured the championship with a three-round total 859, finishing 19 shots ahead of co-runnerups UCF and Ball State at 878. UCF’s Connor Avendell led wire-to-wire in medalist play taking home the title with a score of 208.
North Florida next returns to action Oct. 2-3 at the Gary Koch Collegiate in Tampa, Fla.
