The University of North Florida announces Dr. Murat Tiryakioğlu as the new director of the School of Engineering in the College of Computing, Engineering and Construction, where he will also be a professor of Mechanical Engineering. He assumed the position in July.
Prior to coming to UNF, Tiryakioğlu, a Southside resident, was a distinguished professor in the Department of Engineering at Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania. He is certifiedas a Quality Engineer by the American Society for Quality and has worked at the Boeing Company and at Western Kentucky University.
“I am absolutely thrilled by the opportunity to serve the engineering community and education in Northeast Florida. I am looking forward to working with the community to make a positive difference in Jacksonville,” said Tiryakioğlu.
He grew up around a family business and served as a consultant to several companies, including Tyco and Sumitomo and has also been working as a consultant with Alcoa Technical Center in a variety of projects related to mechanical properties and modeling of aluminum alloys. Tiryakioğlu’s research interests include performance of high quality castings, optimization and modeling of heat treatment of aluminum alloys, process-structure-property relationships in metals, statistical modeling and quality and reliability improvement methods.
“Dr. Tiryakioğlu brings a student-centered focus to education and has high research expectations of himself and others,” said Dr. Peter Braza, UNF interim dean of the College of Computing, Engineering and Construction. “His direct, energetic and charismatic manner will tie all of these together to provide strong leadership for the School of Engineering.”
Tiryakioğlu is the author or co-author of several chapters and more than 100 technical papers and reports as well as the editor of six books. His efforts have been recognized by industry and several professional societies, including a Certificate of Outstanding Performance from The Boeing Company, Young Leader in Light Metals by The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society. He was also named the Eugene Merchant Young Outstanding Manufacturing Engineer by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He is a member of
The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society
and a senior member of the
American Society for Quality
He has doctorate degrees in Metallurgy and Materials from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, and Engineering Management from the University of Missouri-Rolla. He has a master’s degree in Engineering Management from the University of Missouri-Rolla and a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Boğaziçi University.
