University of North Florida golfers Kevin Aylwin, Kevin Phelan and Sean Dale participated in the stroke play portion of the U.S. Amateur Championship help Monday and Tuesday at Chambers Bay (par 71, 7,742 yards) and The Home Course (par 72, 7,420 yards).
The Top 64 finishers in the stroke play competition advanced to match-play beginning Wednesday at Chambers Bay. Aylwin (77-77=154), Phelan (77-77=154) and Dale (78-76=154) all finished tied for 138th in the field of 312 golfers but missed the cut for match-play, that eventually settled at a score of 149.
This marked the first time in program history that three UNF golfers qualified for the same U.S. Amateur and capped off an extremely successful season and summer for the Ospreys.
In addition to the three U.S. Amateur qualifiers, UNF finished 14th at the NCAA Championships in June and earned a final Top 25 national ranking. The Ospreys posted Top Five finishes in 12 of 13 events last season including a pair of tournament titles. North Florida also swept the annual Atlantic Sun Conference postseason awards with Dale (Player of the Year), Phelan (Freshman of the Year) and Scott Schroeder (Coach of the Year) garnering the honors.
During the summer, Phelan qualified for the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and reached the semifinals of the U.S. Public Links. Dale captured the Florida State Amateur title while Major Forbess won the Jacksonville Area Golf Association City Championship.
The U.S. Amateur Championship is the oldest event hosted by the United States Golf Association (USGA) with former champions including the likes of Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Justin Leonard.
