University of North Florida golfer Kevin Phelan defeated Jay Hwang of San Diego 4 and 3 in a first-round match in the U.S. Public Links Championship Wednesday at Bryan Park Golf and Conference Center.
Phelan, a rising sophomore at UNF from St. Augustine, advanced to the match play competition after finishing tied for 24th (71-73—144) during the 36-hole stroke play qualifying Monday and Tuesday. The top 64 finishers in the medal round qualified for match play.
In his match against Hwang, Phelan converted five birdies and tallied just one bogey. Phelan next plays Griffin Wood of Boonville, Ind., Thursday morning in a second round match. Two rounds of match play are scheduled for Thursday at the U.S. Public Links.
This season for the Ospreys, Phelan garnered Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year and first-team all-conference accolades. He recorded 18 sub-par rounds and tallied eight top-10 finishes including a second-place showing at the NCAA South Central Regional, where he helped UNF to advance to the NCAA Championship Tournament.
In addition, Phelan qualified for and participated in the 2010 U.S. Open held at the historic Pebble Beach Golf Links on June 17-20 in Pebble Beach, Calif.
