UNF Thomas G. Carpenter Library Hosts Eartha M. M. White Exhibit

The University of North Florida Thomas G. Carpenter Library presents “Eartha M. M. White: A Jacksonville Legend” exhibit, which features the prominent African-American Jacksonville resident who was known for her humanitarian and philanthropic endeavors in Northeast Florida.

The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, runs through Tuesday, March 16, and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the campus library, which is located in Building 12 between the Fine Arts Center and the new College of Education and Human Services.

The UNF library is fortunate to hold White’s personal papers, containing more than 1,000 items, including correspondence, photographs, documents, notes and other memorabilia.

The exhibit features unique items from the collection—rare photographs showing White and her activities, a small replica of the sculpture “The Harp” by Augusta Savage, and documents relating to the Clara White Mission (named after her mother) in downtown Jacksonville.

In conjunction with the exhibit, there will be a presentation by Dr. Carolyn Williams, UNF history professor, about White on Thursday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. in the Special Collections Reading Room on the first floor of the Carpenter Library. Williams just had a chapter published on White in the book, “The Varieties of Women’s Experiences,” published by the University Press of Florida.
