The University of North Florida’s Physical Facilities has been selected to receive the international APPA Award for Excellence, which is designed to recognize and advance excellence in the field of educational facilities.

UNF is the first state university to receive the award that carries a five-year designation. Only four institutions submitted for consideration and only one award has been given each year since 1988.

The Award for Excellence, APPA’s highest institutional honor, provides educational institutions the opportunity for national and international recognition for outstanding achievements in facilities management. The University will receive the award July 9 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

“Three years ago when I became director, I established a vision to be the best Physical Facilities in the state and Southeastern region of APPA,” said Matthew Taylor, director, UNF Physical Facilities. “Our staff was challenged to improve performance and customer service. They met the challenge, and it’s because of the entire Physical Facilities staff that we won this award.”

Award for Excellence nominations are evaluated using the following criteria: leadership; strategic and operational planning; customer focus; information and analysis; development and management of human resources; process management; and performance results.

UNF Physical Facilities received the award because it demonstrated the ability to look at the organization as a whole, focus on what is important to the University, and concentrate on improving overall performance and customer satisfaction.

APPA is divided into six regions: Eastern, Midwestern, Central, Pacific Coast, Rocky Mountain and Southeastern. UNF is part of the Southeastern region, which serves the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Virgin Islands and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

APPA was founded in Chicago in 1914 by representatives from 14 Midwest institutions. Over the past 35 years, membership has grown from 100 in 1970 to more than 5,200 individuals today in over 1,500 learning institutions throughout the United States, Canada and abroad.
