The University of North Florida Women’s Center and V-Day UNF 2009 will present a benefit performance of “A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer” on Thursday, April 2, and Friday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the UNF Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.
Proceeds benefit the UNF Women’s Center, the Women’s Center of Jacksonville, Betty Griffin House and the V-Day 2009 Spotlight Project. Tickets cost $15 for the general public and $8 for students with any valid student identification. Tickets may be purchased through the UNF Ticket Box Office at (904) 620-2878.
“A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer: Writings to Stop Violence against Women and Girls” is a groundbreaking collection of monologues by world-renowned authors and playwrights, edited by Eve Ensler and Mollie Doyle. The diverse voices in this collection break open, expose and examine violence at all levels: brutality, neglect, a punch and even a put-down. Together, these writings create a true and profound portrait of how violence against women affects every one of us.
The performance is made possible through the efforts of V-Day UNF 2009, a group comprised of UNF students, faculty, staff and community volunteers. In cooperation with the UNF Women’s Center and the global V-Day movement, V-Day UNF works to raise awareness of violence against women and girls through performances and educational events. In February, V-Day UNF presented a well-received performance of Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues.”
V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls, founded by playwright Eve Ensler. Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce annual benefit performances to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities.
For more than 20 years, the UNF Women’s Center has been a vital hub of learning and advocacy for the entire University community. The Women’s Center provides emergency loans, victim advocacy services, rape awareness education as well as information and referrals on a variety of women’s issues, in addition to hosting performances, lectures and events each year.
