Get Ready to Rumba with Tiempo Libre at UNF Fine Arts Center

(JACKSONVILLE, FL) – The Havana, South Beach and First Coast music scenes will ignite when the two-time Grammy-nominated Cuban music group, Tiempo Libre, performs Rumba Sinfónica with University of North Florida’s Wind and String ensembles at the UNF Fine Arts Center on Friday, April 17th at 7:30 p.m. Tiempo Libre will also offer a dynamic, high-voltage and passionate second set performance of timba music, an exciting and engaging combination of Latin jazz and traditional Cuban son, which celebrates both their Cuban heritage and their new American experience. This performance is sponsored by MetroPCS.

Tiempo Libre's members were all classically trained in Cuba's premiere conservatories at a time when it was illegal to listen to American songs on the radio. Now, the Miami-based group is a hit in the U.S. and abroad, celebrated for its incendiary, joyful and dance-inducing performances of timba.

Rumba Sinfónica, written by Venezuelan composer Ricardo Lorenz in association with Jorge Gomez of Tiempo Libre, fuses the urban rhythms of past and present Cuban music with the sophisticated sounds of the classical symphony orchestra and explores the full possibilities of a Cuban band and orchestra playing together. The piece seeks to make a bold statement by allowing Cuban rumba to not only infuse a symphonic work but to also guide its musical content from beginning to end without ever losing its basic features of rhythmic intricacy and melodic plaintiveness. Rumba Sinfónica was commissioned by the Minnesota Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, the Ravinia Festival and the Festival of the Arts Boca and was featured on NPR’s All Things Considered.

The members of Tiempo Libre are true modern heirs to the rich tradition of the music of their native Cuba. Recently signed to SONY, the group will release Bach In Havana, a new Cuban music album which draws inspiration from the music of Bach and features guest tracks with Yosvany Terry and Paquito D'Rivera on May 5th. They have released three critically acclaimed timba albums – Lo Que Esperabas, Arroz Con Mango and Timbiando. Last fall, the Tiempo Libre brought its Afro-Cuban sound to O’Reilly Street, an album recorded with legendary flute player Sir James Galway on O’Reilly Street which included a Cuban take on music from the jazz suites of Claude Bolling.

In addition to their performing and recording careers, the members of Tiempo Libre are particularly committed to the sharing of their rich musical traditions through outreach and educational activities. The group has also become known for its inspiring classes on rumba, Latin jazz and traditional Cuban music, designed to reach audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
