The University of North Florida’s Department of English will hold auditions for Sophocles’ “Antigone” on Monday, Jan. 12, and Tuesday, Jan. 13, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Andrew Robinson Theater, Building 14. There will also be a music audition for vocalists from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the same location.

Sophocles’ play is a version adapted by Bertolt Brecht and begins with a modern-day prologue in which two sisters step out of a bomb shelter to discuss the death of their brother, a victim of a dictator’s military machine.

An unpopular war, an inept ruler, political rigidity that stifles dissent, failure to act in accord with humanitarian principles and a defiant woman—Brecht’s version of Antigone—all resonate today.

There are roles available for 16 to 20 males and females of all ages and races. Singers and dancers needed. A 2-minute prepared monologue is suggested but not required.

For more information, contact the Department of English at (904) 620-2273 or Pam Monteleone at (904) 704-3207.
