Attention high school seniors, college-bound students and parents: You can get free assistance with federal financial aid forms during College Goal Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24. Participants also have a chance to win a scholarship just for attending!

Students who reside in or near Duval County can attend the free session at the FCCJ Advanced Technology Center, 401 W. State St. (between Pearl and Broad streets), while students who reside or live near Nassau County can attend a free session at the Betty P. Cook Nassau Center, 76346 William Burgess Blvd. in Yulee, just east of I-95 off of SR A1A. Free childcare provided during the event.

Nat Glover, special assistant to University of North Florida President John A. Delaney and former Jacksonville sheriff, is this year’s spokesperson for College Goal Sunday. A total of 17 $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. Glover will pull the first scholarship at 1 p.m. at the FCCJ downtown campus.

“A college education is the greatest equalizer in our society and allows you to improve your economic status,” said Glover. “It virtually saved my life; I may have ended up in prison or dead. A college education gave me options.”

Professional financial aid staff and counselors will be on hand to offer free help in all aspects of the financial aid application process. Spanish-speaking professionals will also be available. In order to complete the FAFSA, parents and students should bring the following:

• Social Security number, driver’s license or alien registration card (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
• 2007 IRS 1040 or latest tax return and W-2 statements
• Untaxed yearly income statement for 2007, such as Social Security benefits, Temporary Assistance to Needy Students, welfare and non-educational veterans benefits
• Federal Student Aid PIN (Don’t have one? Sign up for one at www.pin.ed.gov.)
