The University of North Florida received the JaxPride Award of Excellence for its first annual “Garbage on the Green” trash and recycling audit held earlier this month on the UNF campus. The award was presented today at the Prime F. Osborn III Convention Center during the 13th Annual Ideas & Actions Forum, which recognizes successful neighborhood improvement projects that have been completed to preserve, protect and enhance Jacksonville’s scenic beauty.

“We deeply appreciate the volunteers for their efforts and dedication to this project and to our city,” said JaxPride Program Director Susan Harrell. “Additionally, this effort served to educate the public. Anytime we can combine education with beautification we have a definite win-win situation.”

The UNF Environmental Center was the principal sponsor of the Garbage on the Green event, which was held March 8 and was aimed at educating students, faculty and staff about ways to reduce campus trash through recycling and litter-prevention practices. UNF volunteers sorted, measured and catalogued waste during the day-long event, which was spearheaded by Stacy Wheeler, a UNF political science adjunct professor, who also founded Recyclemania, a nationwide event now sponsored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency with over 100 competing universities.

“Stacy’s professionalism, vision and leadership made Garbage on the Green a success,” said Abby Howard Murphy, UNF Environmental Center. “It was the Environmental Center’s pleasure to sponsor her work on the development and management of this project. She worked tirelessly and inspired many of us.”

JaxPride, a Coalition for Visual Enhancement, Inc., is a nonprofit organization that promotes the development of Jacksonville and its neighborhoods as a vibrant, livable and visually-appealing community through advocacy, education assistance of neighborhood efforts and community envisioning processes.
