The University of North Florida Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team returned to Jacksonville as a regional winner after participating in the “Duel in the Swamp” competition held at Valdosta State University, the team’s second time to win this competition. The team will advance to the national “Duel in the Desert” in Tucson, Ariz., in March at the University of Arizona, where they will be matched against 23 other winning teams from across the country.

The winning UNF SIFE/FIS team consisted of graduate student Maria Nykyforovych and juniors Shannon Coles, Wayne Daniel and Chris Miller. They competed against the University of Florida, Florida State University, Flagler College, College of Charleston and Georgia Southwestern State University.

The “Duel in the Desert” is a national personal financial case study competition sponsored by the University of Arizona Students in Free Enterprise team. At this event, teams are given hypothetical case studies about a family in financial distress.

During the past academic year, the UNF SIFE team developed several educational outreach projects in the Jacksonville community to help promote the principles of entrepreneurship, including Little Hands Gathering Cans. This five-week program is targeted at Duval County elementary schools and the Northside Community Involvement Center. Students are taught awareness of their environmental needs, while at the same time being introduced to a playful entrepreneurial setting.

SIFE is an international non-profit organization active on over 1,800 university campuses in more than 40 countries. SIFE teams create economic opportunities in their communities by organizing outreach projects that teach market economics, entrepreneurship, personal financial success skills and business ethics.
