Shane Horn, a junior education major at the University of North Florida, recently received a scholarship from the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to combat-wounded veterans.

Only 33 scholars nationwide received the scholarship this year, with its highest award ever of $3,000. The scholarship exists to assist recipients of the Purple Heart or their relatives in college, whether it is undergraduate or graduate-level coursework. Criteria include having at least a 2.75 GPA, full-time college enrollment, community service and leadership.

“Shane has been an outstanding student and is on his way to becoming an exceptional teacher,” said Larry Daniel, UNF College of Education dean. “This outstanding young man has provided leadership within our student organizations and in his community service. He possesses the character and discipline necessary to a career in education.”

Horn, a St. Nicholas resident, has served in numerous leadership roles both on and off the UNF campus. He serves as president of the Student National Education Association and as treasurer for the UNF Theatre Group. He was the recipient of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award and a finalist for the Albert D. Ernest Jr. Caring Award. Additionally, Horn has coordinated charity drives for orphans in Japan as well as in Afghanistan and has chaired the Special Olympics Committee in Japan.

Horn qualified for the military scholarship since his grandfather, William H.F. Page, received a Purple Heart for his service in World War II. His father, the late John H. Horn, also received a Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam. An Air Force veteran, Horn has served both in Asia and the Middle East. He plans on obtaining a bachelor’s degree in social studies education and teaching in public schools on military bases overseas.
