JACKSONVILLE -- University of North Florida distance runner Zepherinus “Zeph” Joseph of Jacksonville will represent his home country of St. Lucia at the Summer Olympics in Greece on Aug. 29.
Joseph, who turns 29 on Aug. 13, is a four-time All-America athlete for UNF and was the Division II Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 2002. He was runner-up in both the 5k and 10k runs in the Outdoor Track Championship his senior year in 2002.
Joseph was selected to run in the Olympic Marathon for St. Lucia based on his time in the Twin Cities Marathon in Minnesota last fall. Joseph ran the race in 2:16:06; the Olympic Standard is 2:18:00.
The Olympic Marathon will close out the Summer Games, as it is Olympic tradition that the marathon finish at the stadium to kick off the closing ceremonies.
Joseph has come back from injuries received in a 2001 accident in which he and another UNF athlete were hit by a car while running in Jacksonville. The other athlete, Glenn “Russ” Steward, recovered from his injuries and returned to UNF the following year, but he died suddenly a year after the accident. The two men were best friends and roommates, and Steward’s death inspired Joseph to work even harder and dedicate his senior season to Steward.
Joseph plans to return to UNF after the Olympics to continue work toward his degree in building construction management.
