Landing Event Kicks Off UNF Homecoming

JACKSONVILLE – University of North Florida alumni have a chance to revisit their college days and meet today’s UNF students at the ninth annual Homecoming celebration Feb. 20 to 28.

Homecoming events will kick off with an Alumni Reunion Happy Hour at The Jacksonville Landing’s center stage from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20.

The week will be packed with events for students and alumni and lead up to a show by comedians Carlos Mencia and Pablo Francisco on Friday, Feb. 27, at 8 p.m. in the UNF Arena.

Mencia is known for his humorous social commentary. He has a recurring role as Felix Boulevard on Disney’s “The Proud Family” and has been on “The Shield” on FX Channel. He has had two solo HBO specials, was a guest host for NBC’s “Later,” and has appeared on “The Tonight Show.”

Mencia also was on tour with Francisco and Freddy Soto in “The Three Amigos.” Francisco is in the new movie “My Baby’s Daddy.” He also appeared on “MAD TV.”

The show is free for UNF students, and general admission tickets are $5. Tickets are available from the University Ticket Box Office at (904) 620-2878. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Events continue on Saturday, Feb. 28, with the Alumni Scholarship 5k walk/run, which begins at 9 a.m. in front of the UNF Arena. Registration forms are available from the Office of Alumni Services at (904) 620-2132.

After the walk/run, the campus will turn to “Wild Western Days” for the Ozzie Gras Parade and pre-game tent party at the Arena at noon. The tent party includes a picnic lunch and entertainment suitable for the whole family.

The afternoon is filled with a choice of free UNF athletic events. The men’s and women’s tennis teams with play Georgia College at noon at the tennis complex. Then the Lady Osprey softball team will challenge the University of South Carolina-Aiken in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. at the softball field. The Ospreys will challenge Kennesaw State in basketball, with the women playing at 2 p.m. and the men at 4 p.m. in the Arena.
