JACKSONVILLE -- Noted "Newsweek" foreign affairs editor and columnist Fareed Zakaria will return to the University of North Florida on Monday, Feb. 23, to deliver a lecture at the University Center.
Zakaria will discuss his recent book, “The Future of Freedom: Illiberal Democracy at Home and Abroad,” at 7:30 p.m. at the University Center on the UNF campus. The lecture is free, but tickets are required. Tickets are available from the Ticket Box Office at (904) 620-2878.
Zakaria’s visit concludes a week of special events to mark the inauguration of UNF President John Delaney. Inaugural events begin Monday, Feb. 26, and include such events as the rededication of the Honorary Founders plaque, dedication of the new Science and Engineering Building, a performance by Gaelic Storm and receptions with the president. The highlight of the week will be Delaney’s inauguration Friday, Feb. 20.
Zakaria is widely respected for his ability to spot economic and political trends around the world. In his latest book, he maintains that democracy is not inherently good and that while it works in some situations, it is not the best system of government in others. He notes Third World countries that proclaimed themselves democracies immediately after independence have become dictatorships within a decade.
Zakaria supervises "Newsweek’s" overseas editions, which include English-language editions distributed to more than 3.5 million readers in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. He also writes a regular column for the news magazine, and he also appears occasionally in "The Washington Post." In addition, he has written on international affairs in "The New York Times," "The Wall Street Journal," "The New Yorker" and "The New Republic."
Before joining Newsweek, Zakaria was managing editor of foreign affairs and in 1999 was named “one of the 21 most important people of the 21st Century” by "Esquire" magazine.
Zakaria also has taught in Harvard University’s Department of Government. He received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and his doctorate in international relations from Harvard.
The lecture is sponsored by UNF, the World Affairs Council of Jacksonville, Water Street Capital and the UNF Foundation.
