Media Tip Sheet

Each week we prepare a “TIP SHEET” for Jacksonville-area media highlighting events and activities of interest to the community. Please feel free to contact the Office of News&Publications at (904) 620-2140 for additional information on any event. Information also can be obtained by visiting the UNF Web calendar at http://www.unf.edu/calendar. Individuals attending all events on campus are reminded that $2 parking permits are required and can be purchased at the Information Booth as they enter campus.

Expert Available on Oil Prices

With the current increase in gasoline prices apparent throughout the region, UNF Management, Marketing and Logistics Professor Reza Vaghefi is available to talk about the issue. Vaghefi sees the current spike in prices to be caused by turmoil in Venezuela, the threat of war in Iraq and price gouging by some companies. However, Vaghefi does not see huge long-term price increases in fuel because major suppliers such as Saudi Arabia realize such sustained increases would stimulate development of alternative systems, such as hydrogen fuel cells for cars. Interviews with Vaghefi can be arranged by calling the Office of News&Publications at (904) 620-2140.

Women's History Month Kick-Off

Women's History Month kicks off Tuesday, March 4, with "An Evening with Sapphire: Poet and Philosopher" at 6:30 p.m. in the Robinson Theatre. The Susan B. Anthony Award will be presented at the reception prior to the start of the main program.

The Susan B. Anthony award spotlights a member of the UNF community who has made significant contributions to the women of UNF by serving as a role model; by working to improve the position of women on campus through advocacy and education; and by exhibiting qualities of leadership on campus.

Sapphire is the author of the best-selling novel "Push," which looks at the world of Precious Jones. The book provides a forum for discussions about accepted norms and attitudes about women, sexuality, race and politics. The event, sponsored by the Women's Center, is free.

For more information, contact Annabel Brooks at (904) 620-2528.

Irish Poet, Musician to Visit UNF

Belfast poet Ciaran Carson will visit UNF on Wednesday, March 5, for a poetry reading (with a bit of music, too) at 7:30 p.m. in the Robinson Theatre, followed by a reception and book signing, as part of the John Francis Reilly Irish Studies Performance and Lecture Series.

Carson has written “The Ballad of HMS Belfast” and “Breaking News,” his 11th volume of poems, which is set for release in the United States in March. He has received numerous literary awards, including the T.S. Eliot Prize. He performs traditional Irish music on the tinwhistle and flute and has emerged as an important voice for Northern Ireland. A photo of Carson is available.
