Tempest at UNF
JACKSONVILLE -- The National Shakespeare Company of New York City will present "The Tempest" at the University of North Florida on Feb. 26 bringing one of Shakespeare’s most mysterious works to campus.
The touring production will begin at 8 p.m. in the Robinson Theater and is free and open to the public.
"The Tempest" is directed by Randolph Rand who has worked on many occasions with The National Shakespeare Company, now in its 39th year of touring throughout the country. Last year, he directed NSC’s production of "Hamlet." This season "The Tempest" is joined by "As You Like It" on the national tour.
Eight actors perform multiple roles in both productions, offering more than 100 performances between September 2001 and May of 2002. The actors, trained as teaching artists, will offer a & session after the show and will also conduct a student acting workshop on campus, also on Feb. 26.
"The Tempest" is about a king who has been forced from his kingdom by the trickery of his brother and has been stranded on an island for years, with only his daughter as company. When his brother’s boat is shipwrecked on the island, he struggles to overcome his anger towards his brother and to teach his daughter about the potential for compassion.
Because the National Shakespeare Company is a touring company, the actors wear many hats. Along with the company manager, they load in, focus the lights prior to a performance and then strike the set and pack up for the following show. The sets are easily portable and able to fit into a variety of theatres of different types and dimensions on the tour. The simple set allows the Company to focus on its mission of presenting Shakespeare’s language and ideas clearly.
The performance is made possible through a grant from the UNF Undergraduate Academic Enrichment Program and support from the Student Government Association.
