Famed Austrian Orchestra To Play All-Bernstein Program at UNF Fine Arts Center

The Bruckner Orchester Linz, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies and accompanied by guest violinist Renaud Capuçon and mezzo-soprano Kathryn Handsaker, will perform at 7:30 p.m., Friday, November 13 at the UNF Fine Arts Center. The program features famed American composer Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony No. 1, Serenade, and “symphonic dances” from “West Side Story.”
The Bruckner Orchester Linz, which looks back on a history and tradition dating back more than 200 years, has developed over the last three decades into one of the leading orchestras of Central Europe. With its 110 musicians it is not only the concert orchestra for the state of Upper Austria but also the opera orchestra at the Landestheater Linz. The major performances of the Bruckner Orchester in Linz include concerts at the Bruckner Festival, the Ars Electronica Festival, the Linzer Klangwolke, and the Voestival. The Bruckner Orchester regularly leads concerts tours to Italy, Germany, Japan, France, Turkey, in the United States and across many other countries.
Internationally acclaimed musician and conductor Dennis Russell Davies is avidly sought out for his extraordinary breadth of repertoire, technical brilliance and fearless music-making. A maverick in his field, he is hailed as “one of the few conductors whose unquestioned commitment to music of our age has not severed his connections to the standard repertory.” An esteemed presence who consistently remains at the forefront of both orchestral and operatic worlds, Davies is also an accomplished pianist, and is in demand by orchestras, composers and fellow musicians worldwide for his inspiring collaborations and interpretive maste
Named “Instrumentalist of the Year” for 2005 by the French Victoires de la Musique, Renaud Capuçon has taken his place among the top echelon of young violinists. He has performed with world-renowned orchestras such as the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Bayerische Rundfunk, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre de Paris, NHK Symphony and Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, with conductors Bychkov, Chung, Dudamel, Dutoit, Eschenbach, Fischer and Robertson.
Australian-born Kathryn Handsaker is an accomplished operatic singer in her homeland and abroad.
She has also received many awards and prizes during her solo career. In 2004, she received third prize in the German Operatic Award, Melbourne, Australia. In 2004 she was a finalist for “Le Jeunes Voix du Rhin Young Artist Program” in Colmar, France. During 1999 Handsaker received an award from the Commonwealth Bank in Australia for the best performance in “L’enfant et les Sortileges.”
