EPI Faculty Team

The dynamic EPI faculty team model co-teaching in the delivery of the curriculum. Large group sessions address major teaching-related concepts. EPI participants study and apply content as related to their particular disciplines and/or grade levels in small groups.

Betty Bennett, Ph.D. (Educational Leadership, FSU), is our EPI Director with 15 years of experience in K-12 education as a teacher, administrator, coordinator for program for at risk high school students, and district trainer of beginning teachers. She also has 10 years of experience as an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at UNF including teaching in UNF’s Belize M.ED program. Dr. Bennett has been with the EPI since its inception in 2007. She has written two books on school discipline, has co-authored FTCE test review guides, and has worked with the FLDOE on revision of several of the state teacher and administrator certification exams. Dr. Bennett is a certified martial arts instructor and through this venue has taught anti-bullying to children and women's self-defense. She was Pak’s Karate of Mandarin’s 2005 Instructor of the Year. She is considered UNF’s expert on bullying and is called on often for news interviews. Her passion is creating safe learning environments for all students.

Shannon Wine, M.Ed. (Disability Services, UNF), is our Curriculum Specialist and Instructor and is currently a Special Education Teacher at Ocean Palms Elementary.  Prior to moving to St. Johns County, Shannon served as the ESE Lead Teacher at Waterleaf Elementary for two years, where she coordinated services for 100+ students with varying exceptionalities in PK-5th grades. She previously taught at Woodland Acres Professional Development School for several years, where she supervised student teachers and welcomed other UNF students to her class to learn how to teach young children effectively. She also served as a Reading Coach at Woodland Acres Elementary, a Reading First Reading Coach at Annie R. Morgan Elementary School, and an Early Literacy Coach for Episcopal Children's Services Head Start Program. In addition, Ms. Wine was the 2000 Outstanding UNF Graduate Student in Special Education, and was recognized as one of 5 finalists for the 2010 Duval County Teacher of the Year. She received the 2010 Gladys Prior Award for Career Teaching Excellence.

Stephen S. Brown, APR, MBA (MBA, Jacksonville University) is our Instructor and is currently a Social Studies Specialist with Duval County Public Schools and an Adjunct Professor at Florida State College of Jacksonville. He brings a wealth of real-life business experience to the Educator Preparation Institute.  In fact, he is a cohort 2 graduate of the program, beginning his career in education in 2008.  Stephen’s experience is in middle school (grades 6, 7, and 8).  He is living proof that you can have a second career in teaching and be successful, having won numerous awards including Rookie of the Year, Best All Around Teacher, Diversity Champion and five nominations for Teacher of the Year.  He recently left the classroom to work directly with middle school Social Studies teachers; assisting with lesson planning, lesson modeling, rituals and routines and much more, all designed to engage our students.  He’s eager to be joining the EPI staff; it’s the fulfillment of a long-time dream of giving back.
