Welcome to the College of Education and Human Services at the University of North Florida where we believe that everything begins with a student who wants to make a positive difference in the world! Our work breathes life into our university's mission which is to foster the:
"Intellectual and cultural growth and civic awareness of its students, preparing them to make significant contributions to their communities in the region and beyond. At UNF, students and faculty engage together and individually in the discovery and application of knowledge. UNF faculty and staff maintain an unreserved commitment to student success within a diverse, supportive campus culture."
As you can imagine, our college provides amazing opportunities that will prepare you for your future career!
Interested in Education?
Today, too many children are leaving schools unprepared to successfully reach their dreams and, as a result, equal opportunity for every student to learn is of unparalleled importance. Research indicates that a quality educator is the single most important factor in improving student learning. We believe that! Because we care so much about improving teaching and learning, we have a wide range of programs in early childhood, elementary, secondary, and special education, leadership, and school counseling. If you are interested in teaching or leading, our programs will prepare you to make a difference in education.
One way we make sure you are well prepared for your future career is through working collaboratively with district partners. Partnerships are key to our education programs, as they provide real-world learning experiences. For example, in collaboration with Duval County Public Schools, we have established Urban Professional Development Schools where faculty and practicing educators collaboratively support learning in classrooms and schools. Additionally, in partnership with the Jacksonville Public Education Fund and Duval County Public Schools, we offer innovative programs such as the Jacksonville Teacher Residency Program. We also have an Educator Preparation Institute for those who already have degrees in other relevant fields and are considering a career in teaching. And, if you are interested in gaining a global perspective, our partnerships extend well beyond the region to include learning opportunities in countries like Belize, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, Austria, and Slovenia.
Interested in Higher Education and Administration (HEA)?
If you are interested in higher education our program is innovative, student centered, and rapidly growing. Our HEA program develops students seeking entry to careers in higher education as well as professionals from institutions across the region, including UNF, Jacksonville University, Florida State College at Jacksonville, Edward Waters College, and Florida Coastal School of Law. HEA at UNF is one of only five programs offering coursework in international and comparative higher education. The HEA program enhances the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership by offering cognate courses to Ed.D. students with an interest in higher education. In addition, partnerships are key to our higher education program. At UNF, you have the opportunity to participate in experiential learning and graduate assistantships through Jacksonville University and UNF Housing.
Interested in Sport Management
Our college also offers an exceptional Sport Management program. Today, the demand for leaders in the sport industry is growing rapidly resulting in a need for well-prepared graduates. Our college prepares sport management graduates for exciting careers in professional sport franchises, intercollegiate athletic departments, sports media, and sports organizing committees. If you choose sport management, your work may take a variety of paths. For example, you might work in business, facility and event management, community sport and tourism or promotion and marketing. Our program provides our students professional experience in a wide range of sport fields and as a result we have strong partnerships with prominent sport organizations such as the PGA, Jacksonville Armada, Jacksonville Suns, Jacksonville Jaguars and SMT. The UNF sports management program is well respected and can help you accomplish your goal of working in a sport related field.
Interested in American Sign Language/English Interpreting or Deaf Education?
American Sign Language (ASL) satisfies the UNF foreign language requirement and is offered within the ASL/Deaf Studies Minor (open to all majors) the nationally-accredited ASL/English Interpreting Program, and the BS degree in ASL/English Interpreting. The BS degree program prepares entry-level interpreters, who manage intercultural demands and complex cognitive tasks for conveying equivalent messages between American Sign Language and English when people do not share a language. The master’s degree offers programs for general practitioners and interpreters who are interested in teaching interpreting. The latter program is offered via an academia-industry collaboration with the VRS Interpreting Institute in Salt Lake City. The Interpreting Program is renowned for its unique 2 + 2 (AS-BS) option at the undergraduate level and its distance-friendly delivery methods (synchronous online, asynchronous online and hybrid). Consistent with our college’s mission, our programs place great importance on cultural relevance when interacting and communicating with individuals who are Deaf, DeafBlind, or hard of hearing. Our new Deaf Education undergraduate program also respects and addresses diversity within the field by ensuring that all graduates
are well-prepared and equipped for the challenges of educating all students
with hearing loss.
In closing, I am proud to say that our faculty are exemplary educators and researchers who are devoted to preparing quality graduates, as well as identifying, confronting, and creatively solving problems that schools and other human service organizations face today. As you can see, our college is a place where outstanding students can begin their careers and pursue new career goals. If you are looking for a career that makes a difference, our college is the right place for you.
UNF is an exciting place to be! Come see for yourself. Meet our faculty, talk to our students, and sit in our classrooms. By the way, did I mention we are located just minutes from the Atlantic Ocean? We look forward to seeing you soon on campus.
