Academic Learning Compacts

An Academic Learning Compact (ALC) is a statement of what students will know and be able to do upon completion of an undergraduate academic program. More specifically, ALCs:

  1. Identify the expected core learning outcomes for baccalaureate program graduates in the areas of:
    • discipline-specific content knowledge and skills
    • communication skills
    • critical thinking skills

  2. List the types of assessments that students might encounter in the program and that faculty will use to judge how student learning reflects the expected outcomes.

For more information concerning Academic Learning Compacts please visit the ALC Policy webpage.

Full text versions of exemplary ALCs from the 2013 assessment year are available by permission of the authors.

ALCs for the 2014 assessment year will be scored using an ALC rating rubric. The rating rubric for 2014 is unchanged in substance, but contains some wording tweaks, shown in the attached version. Also, please note this important statement from the Provost, which applies to ALCs for all programs:

"Student learning is at the core of UNF's mission, and because student learning outcomes increasingly drive our design of curricula and deployment of resources, it is expected that faculty will contribute to the assessment of learning.  Justifications for the recruitment of new or replacement faculty positions are strengthened when departments are able to demonstrate ongoing assessment of student learning outcomes. Departments must develop and maintain satisfactory Academic Learning Compacts before new and replacement faculty lines can be justified." (Interim Provost Earle Traynham, June 13, 2013)
