Direct Parent PLUS Loan Instructions
Step 1: Apply for a Direct Parent PLUS Loan
Go to
www.studentloans.gov
.
Log in using your federal PIN number.
If you do not remember your PIN, or are a new user, use the PIN website link.
Complete the Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan Application.
Click “Request PLUS Loan”. Be sure to complete EVERY step of the PLUS Loan process.
A credit check is required to determine your eligibility to borrow PLUS Loan funds. UNF and the U.S. Department of Education will notify you of your credit check status.
If approved
, the student will be notified through UNF email of the approval, with instructions on how to sign a Master Promissory Note.
If denied
, the student will receive a denial letter from the U.S. Department of Education.
The parent may contact the Direct Loan Servicing Center to either appeal the decision or investigate the option of securing an endorser for the loan.
OR
The student may submit a request for additional Unsubsidized loans funds from UNF, by submitting a Loan Action Request form. The form is available for download from Financial Aid Forms.
If the student did not file the FAFSA
, he or she must submit a FAFSA before the PLUS loan application will be processed. Without a FAFSA, the PLUS loan will not be processed. Students may complete a FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Step 2: Sign a Master Promissory Note
When going online to sign your Master Promissory Note, be sure to have your driver’s license, social security number and 2 references (with complete addresses) ready.
Go to
www.studentloans.gov
. You will need your federal PIN (the same one you used for your FAFSA) to complete. If you do not remember your federal PIN, visit the Department of Education’s PIN website
www.pin.ed.gov
.
Select
Complete Master Promissory Note.
Complete your Promissory Note. Be certain to choose UNF from the “Schools” drop down list to ensure timely delivery and processing of your loan.
Save or print your Promissory Note for your records. Your promissory note does NOT need to be sent to UNF. We will be notified electronically that you have completed it.
