This training will explore the
breadth of identities associated with transgender and gender nonconforming
communities, including the intersecting experiences of race, ethnicity,
culture, socioeconomic circumstances and disability. Participants will learn to
utilize culturally competent language and behavior for addressing and working
with this population and increase their knowledge of health care access, legal
and policy issues that impact transgender communities. The training will
highlight best practices for providing equal access for transgender and gender
nonconforming populations in community health, social service and juvenile
detention settings. Participants will work together to develop concrete
strategies to specific scenarios that they might encounter in their work and
explore trans-affirming systems and procedures for effective service provision.
Interactive, solutions-oriented and engaging, this workshop will provide
opportunities for learning and problem solving at all knowledge levels.
Fair - 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 1:15 to 2:15
Ideal for: Social Workers,
Therapists, Nurses, Attorney’s, Child Welfare workers and service providers
working with the transgender population.
Parking will be free for the first
200 cars associated with this event - Please stop at the I-295 parking services
booth to get a parking pass.

Students! Come meet Willy Wilkinson, award-winning transgender writer and public health consultant who has been advocating for marginalized populations since the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. A dynamic and engaging speaker who is recognized widely for his expertise in transgender issues, Willy has trained and provided consultation services for hundreds of community health organizations, businesses, and educational institutions on how to provide equal access for LGBT populations. He has extensive experience with communities of color, substance users, sex workers, youth and people with disabilities. Willy has been published in numerous anthologies, periodicals and journals, and is the author of Born on the Edge of Race and Gender: A Voice for Cultural Competency.
