Color is supreme in my love of painting. A symphony of color combined with beautiful forms produces the emotional driving force in my artwork. Inspiration comes to me from myriads of visual stimuli, especially the colors and forms in nature – the colors and graceful forms of wild birds, the petals of a flower, the patterns formed in the sand by receding water on a beach, aquatic creatures in the ocean or a drop of dew reflecting the morning’s light on a spider’s web. These and other elements of nature create a sense of wonder within me. The spirit of these elements that I feel is often the starting point for my paintings. When speaking of color, I understand and closely identify with Van Gogh’s statement: “Color in a painting is like enthusiasm in life.” Wild birds and the habitats in which those birds live are gorgeous sources of color – and when those two sources are coupled together we see truly spectacular visual symphonies. The paintings I create express the beauty that I feel from seeing those wild birds in their natural environment.
