LDR3003: Introduction to Leadership

Description: Multiple sections are offered each term. See listing below. Those still open for enrollment as of 7/22/14 are listed as OPEN. This course is open to all students except first year students. This is the gateway course for the Minor in Community Leadership, though students do not have to declare the minor in order to enroll. The course  introduces participants to the major theories of leadership and their application in personal and professional settings. Participants engage in self-reflective and applied learning activities that allow them to draw upon their personal characteristics and experiences in order to make connections between class work and their own developing leadership style.

LDR3240: Intergroup Dialogue Among Diverse Populations


Credits: 3
Description: Students tell us they want opportunities to explore personal values and "learn about who I am and what's important to me." Student will engage difference across identities, values and power disparities. Through dialogic learning, the course underscores the pivotal role that values play in making sense of "truth and knowledge" in higher education and their application to authentic leadership development. The course is designed to provide foundational skills in knowledge needed to participate in and facilitate multicultural group interactions. Particular emphasis is placed on interpreting leadership theory and practice in the context of values, Social Change Theory, and UNF's six core values. Through values-driven leadership, students can make a difference on campus and in the community. This course is open to all Juniors and Seniors and satisfies an elective requirement for the Minor in Community Leadership.

LDR3320: Collaborative Leadership
Credits: 3
Prerequisite: LDR 3003 
Description: The purpose of this course is to teach students how to collaborate successfully in an ever-changing global environment by building the foundation for leadership in both theory and practice that can be applied to any organization or group. Increasing numbers of leaders are needed who are able to work collaboratively and lead across cultures and disciplines from business to educational environments. Collaborative leadership knowledge and skills have become a necessity to enable emerging leaders to transcend differences to build organizations and teams of committed workers and employees. This course is open to all Juniors and Seniors and satisfies an elective requirement for the Minor in Community Leadership

LDR4263: Community Leadership Practicum
Credits: 3
Prerequisite: LDR 3003, LDR 3320 and completion of two leadership electives and permission of Taylor Leadership Institute
Description: This is the culminating course for the Minor in Community Leadership. The course is normally taken during the student's final term in residence at the University of North Florida (UNF), just prior to graduation. Students hone awareness of their leadership style gleaned through review of leadership theory and reflection on their current and prior co-curricular activities, retroactive to their enrollment at UNF. These include on-campus and off-campus activities documented on their Experiential Learning Transcript (ELT), and may include employment, volunteerism, community service, internships, study abroad experiences, and other forms of community-based engagement. Students reflect on their experiential learning about leadership through dialogue and ongoing reflective practice. They finalize their ELT entries, prepare and then deliver their Leadership Capstone Presentation, a verbal narrative/report capturing their leadership development while at UNF.
