Admission Requirements

University requirements:

  1. A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or its equivalent from a foreign institution with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in all work attempted in the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate study.

Additional program requirements:

  1. Official transcripts from all attended institutions
  2. GRE scores (Institutional Code: 5490)
    • Prior to July 1, 2011:     combined score of 1000
    • After July 1, 2011:         153 verbal, 144 quantitative
    • OR three (3) years of professional experience in nutrition and dietetics  
  3. Letter of intent
    • 3 pages in length maximum
    • double-spaced with 1" margins

Applicants not meeting the 3 years of full time work experience in nutrition and dietetics may contact Dr. Catherine Christie for additional admission criteria options including the GRE.

 

Students should be aware that admission into any graduate program is granted on a competitive basis. Students meeting minimum requirements may be denied admission based on such factors as program capacity or academic discretion. Likewise, students may be considered for admission as an exception if stated admissions criteria are not met.

THE PROGRAM
Program Overview

This degree is designed for those students who wish to emphasize the application of advanced nutrition knowledge in clinical or community based health programs. There are three options to this 43-semester hour program:

 

Thesis option

The Master of Science in Nutrition thesis option allows students to pursue an independent research project as a culminating experience in their master’s program.

Non-Thesis option

The Master of Science in Nutrition non-thesis option allows students to complete 12 pre-approved credits through a series of project, field experience, and independent study courses.

 

These two options are designed for Registered Dietitians who wish to pursue graduate training with an emphasis in clinical or community dietetics. Persons with a bachelor’s in nutrition or dietetics that is older than seven years will receive a course by course evaluation to determine needed prerequisites after application is made to the program.

 

A distance learning (DL) option for the MSH/Nutrition thesis and MSH/Nutrition non-thesis programs will become available Fall 2012.

 

Clinical Practicum (Internship) option 

The third option, is the Master of Science in Nutrition clinical practicum or internship option (MS/DI), which enables graduates from the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) approved didactic programs in dietetics to fulfill the requirement for a pre-professional practice experience and become eligible to sit for the National Registration Examination. This MS/DI also participates in the ACEND ISPP (Individualized Supervised Practice Program).

Fifteen students are admitted each fall to this 4-semester, full-time program. Students must complete both the Master’s Degree and Internship experience in order to receive a verification statement and sit for the National Registration Examination.

Special Notes about the Program

The Internship component of the Nutrition MSH program requires a separate application and students must participate in the D & D Computer Matching process for internship admission.
