Abstract

The collection provides historical documentation of business enterprises, and their operations and activities in Northeast Florida from the late nineteenth century to date. The core of the collection is diverse and disparate print materials, including advertising cards and folders, brochures, convention programs, correspondence, illustrations, journals, reports, restaurant menus, and retail store coupons. Unique items include a late nineteenth century advertisement for a prominent Jacksonville retail store, and a panorama photograph of store employees in 1926. Artifacts and memorabilia among others include building dedication items, newspaper linotype blocks, and a bank money bag.

Acquisition

Items acquired via the donations of Valarie Lockwood, Linda L. Smith, UNF faculty, and Archives staff. It is anticipated that items will continue to be added to this collection.

Historical / Biographical Note

The primary source materials in this collection provide insights into the activities and operations of business enterprises in Northeast Florida. The earliest item is an advertisement circa 1886; the majority of the materials date from the early to mid-twentieth century.

Scope and Content Note

Printed materials are varied in format, including advertising cards and folders, brochures, convention programs, correspondence, illustrations, journals, reports, restaurant menus, retail store coupons, and train time tables. The bulk of the materials were printed in the early to mid-twentieth century, and provide evidence of companies extant at the time and documentation of their locations in downtown Jacksonville. The representative range of companies are advertising and sales, automotive, banking, insurance, maritime and shipbuilding, railway, real estate and development, and retail stores. Unique items include a late nineteenth century advertisement for a prominent Jacksonville retail store, and a panorama photograph of store employees in 1926. Artifacts and memorabilia include building dedication items, newspaper linotype blocks, and a bank money bag.
