Politician, Florida state legislator and attorney. Born in Jacksonville, Florida on June 20, 1920. Alice Schumpert, mother; John E. Mathews, Sr., father, state legislator, constitutional lawyer, and Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court (1955). Educated at Emory University (A.B. 1942); Harvard University (LL.B. 1948). Served in the United States Navy, 1942-1946. Awarded Bronze Star, and eight Battle Stars for war service. Member, Florida House of Representatives, 1956-1962; Member, Florida Senate, 1962-1970. President, Florida Senate, 1969-1970. Unsuccessful candidate, Florida Gubernatorial elections: 1964, 1970. Retired from politics to private legal practice, 1970. Member, Florida Constitutional Revision Commission, 1977-1978. Died on January 7, 1988 in Gainesville, Florida.
