Abstract

Courtland Buckman was a real estate executive, civil servant, merchant, and community leader in Jacksonville, Florida. The collection contains correspondence and printed materials relating to Mr. Buckman's real estate business.  Items span the years 1860-1938, with the bulk of the materials concentrated in 1897-99 and 1903-1904.

Historical / Biographical Note

Born in Lake City, Florida, during the Civil War, on December 8, 1863.  Third child of Captain Thomas Ellwood Buckman (Civil War veteran) and Selina Cleland Buckman. Educated in Jacksonville, Florida schools; lived there most of his life, except for a brief period in Daytona Beach, Florida. In 1886, he served as Deputy to his father who was the County Clerk of Duval County; relocated in the late 1880's to Daytona Beach where he entered the mercantile business and served one term as Mayor. In 1894, he returned to Jacksonville, worked briefly with the Singer Manufacturing Company before becoming a real estate agent with the C. C. Robertson Real Estate Company. After establishing his own real estate firm in May 1897(C. Buckman), he later formed a partnership with Alfred C. Ulmer (Buckman, Ulmer and Mitchell, Inc.)

 

Mr. Buckman was a prominent civic and business leader, and a member of numerous social and business organizations, including the Jacksonville Board of Trade. His older brother, Henry Holland Buckman, was a Florida state legislator and Jacksonville attorney. The H. H. Buckman bridge spanning the St. Johns River in Orange Park, Florida is named in his honor.

 

Courtland Buckman died on October 1, 1952.


Scope and Content Note

Primarily incoming business correspondence, most of which are inquiries about land purchases in Florida and rental property management transactions. The collection in general provides documentation of business life in Jacksonville in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.  Includes also: Florida Uniform Examination Questions (1896); campaign literature and messages of Florida Governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward; a nineteenth century Jacksonville newsletter, 'St. Andrew's Messenger' (1891); and several letters referring to the Jacksonville fire of May 3, 1901.
