The Twitter Effect: Five Ways Tweeting Impacts Politics and Democracy
More than 100 million people worldwide use the microblog Twitter, and it’s becoming clear that Twitter is affecting the political process in many ways. This presentation is based on a new book by UNF Associate Professor of Communication John Parmelee titled “Politics and the Twitter Revolution: How Tweets Influence the Relationship between Political Leaders and the Public.” Dr. Parmelee will discuss the surprising influence that political tweets have on individual’s political views and Twitter’s contribution to political polarization. Q&A will follow the presentation.

Film Screening: Las Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo and the Search for Identity
Las Abuelas de Plaza Mayo in Argentina is committed to finding their lost grandchildren, stolen, they believe, by the government of their country some 30 years ago during Argentina's Dirty War (1976-1983). The documentary film Las Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo and the Search for Identity tells the story of the grandmothers’ 35-year search for their missing grandchildren.

Rally in Tally 2012
Rally in Tally gives students the opportunity to speak with legislators about their views on higher education in Florida. Student Government will sponsor transportation, breakfast and lunch for the students. C-Span Campaign 2012 Bus Tour
The C-SPAN Bus will be on the UNF campus to share interactive presentations on the media, C-SPAN, TV production and public affairs with students, faculty and the public. The Bus is equipped with computer kiosks that access C-SPAN's many websites, including the Video Library, C-SPAN Classroom, Congressional Chronicle, and Book TV. Visitors can also test their knowledge of public affairs with quizzes, learn about StudentCam and follow the Road to the White House.

Florida Modern-Day Slavery Museum
The Florida Modern-Day Slavery Museum is an initiative of the Student Farmworker Alliance and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers to educate the citizens of Florida and the nation on the continuing absence of economic justice for low income workers, especially agricultural workers. The museum is a mobile educational vehicle in the form of a box-truck outfitted as a replica of the trucks involved in the latest slavery prosecution and accompanied by educational displays on the history of slavery in Florida -- its roots, the reasons it continues today, and its solutions. There will also be opportunities for interested students to participate in action surrounding this issue as well. The Tea Party -- A Feminist Movement?
The Tea Party movement is notable in part for the number of women in leadership roles, from Sarah Palin to the group "Smart Girl Politics." Does the fact of female leadership make the Tea Party a feminist movement, or does it take something more? A panel of professors and political activists will consider this question.
Constitution Challenge
Janet Owen, Vice-President for Governmental Affairs, will host the second annual Constitution Challenge quiz game Tuesday, September 14 at 6 p.m. in the Student Union Auditorium, Room 3703-C. Symposium on Florida Farm Workers
This symposium will include presentations by representatives from the Student/Farm Worker Alliance (Meghan Cohorst) and the Coalition for Immokalee Workers. Through a short documentary film and discussion they will communicate the challenges and struggles facing the farm worker population in Florida, as well as the campaigns underway to address these issues. There will also be a presentation, and student-created documentary clips, based on the work of a Professor Jennifer Marquis at Edison State College on the children of Immokalee, the children of farm workers, and the success of the United Arts Council and other community agencies.

Jacksonville "Faces of Homelessness" Speakers' Bureau
This
event provided an opportunity for the University community to learn
more about the plight of homeless individuals, as well as ways that
community members can help the homeless and impoverished in our city.
Tamara Patton, Americorps VISTA for the Emergency Services and Homeless
Coalition of Jacksonville (ESHC), presented present an overview about
homelessness on local, state and national levels. Three local speakers then shared their own personal experiences with homelessness. Donations were collected to benefit the speakers, who
were formerly or currently struggling with poverty and homelessness.
Rally in Tally
Students traveled to Tallahassee, Florida to participate in a rally to support higher education at the Florida Capitol. This event has been sponsored by Student Government for three consecutive years.
Read Across America
The National Education Association's Read Across America is an annual
reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in
every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of
children's author Dr. Seuss. At UNF students had the opportunity
volunteer to read to approximately 600 children who visited the UNF
campus in 2009 and 2010 from local schools and early learning centers.
JCCI Forward's JaxFacts: Local Government
Students and community members were invited to participate in a dinner and
"speed dating"-style discussion session with Jacksonville mayoral candidates who planned to run in the 2010 election.

During this event the first few months of Obama's presidency were discussed. Mr. Shannon Ogden, First Coast
News, moderated this discussion. Panelists included the Honorable Kevin
Hyde, City Councilman; Chris Hand, attorney with Terrell and Hogan;
Shannon Hewett, a lobbyist with Southern Strategy Group; and Jonathan
Howe, retired Four-Star United States Navy Admiral.
Building Better Communities: A Community Change Tool-kit
Jacksonville Community Council, Inc. (JCCI) Executive Director Skip
Cramer shared community improvement strategies and discussed the
critical role that citizens play in American Democracy at the local
level.
Our Economic Challenges: What Can the New President Do?
This discussion was focused on the current economic crisis and
strategies for improving our nation's economic outlook. The panel was be
moderated by Dr. Parvez Ahmed, and featured Dr. Sidney Rosenberg, Dr.
Paul Mason, and Dr. David Jaffee.

political outlook after the November elections. This event was

This discussion was centered on a re-cap of the 2008 presidential
election, what we can expect from the new Administration, and what we
will see from the President in his first 100 days. The panel was

Film Screening: Flight from Death
This film uncovers death anxiety as a possible
root cause of many of our behaviors on a psychological, spiritual, and
cultural level.
After the film, a presentation was given by producer
Greg Bennick, as well as a presentation by Sheldon Solomon, the social
psychologist featured in the film.
"The Way We Will Be" Lecture by John Zogby
John Zogby is the president and CEO of Zogby
International. He has conducted polls and focus groups around the world,
though he has gained the most publicity for his polls of U.S.
presidential elections. This event was sponsored by the UNF Foundation
and the World Affairs Council.
Evoking Rights Film Screening
This documentary film, produced by Dr. Jillian
Smith and her students, features President John Delaney and other
members of the UNF campus community answering the question, "What do
rights mean to you?" Students, faculty, and staff were able to stop in
to the University Gallery to view this film.
Capitol Steps Patriotic Pre-Show Jamboree
A pre-show patriotic jamboree was held on the
front porch of the Fine Arts Center. The event featured voter
registration, food, music, and activities.

Project Vote Smart
Project Vote Smart is a non-partisan, non-profit,
voter education organization. They provide information on presidential
candidates such as campaign finance records, State and Federal Key
Votes, and Speeches. This national bus tour is stopped at UNF to provide
students with voter education.
The Outlook for Success in Iraq and Afghanistan
This lecture was given by Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, assistant to the
President and deputy national security adviser for Iraq and
Afghanistan. This event was sponsored by the World Affairs Council.

production and public affairs with students, faculty and the public. The
bus was open for tours and on-site interviews were conducted with
students for their C-SPAN youtube site.
Tour of Jacksonville City Hall
Students were given the
opportunity to learn about local government by meeting with city council
members, attending a City Council Meeting, and touring City Hall.
Tour of the Florida Times-Union
Students were able to learn
about how politicians are covered in the media and tour the Florida
Times-Union building in Jacksonville, Florida.
Jacksonville Week in Review
Students sat in on a taping
of "Jacksonville Week in Review," a weekly broadcast produced by
WJCT on issues of the day in Jacksonville. Students were able to view
the television production process as well as discuss challenges facing
the Jacksonville community with participants of the show. This program
gave students insight into the media as well as how civil discourse is
conducted.
Film Screening: Does the Media Turn Off Young Voters?
Students in Marcia
Ladendorff's Media Literacy: Campaign Edition course traveled
to Washington, DC during Spring Break and created short films centered
on the questions: What is the impact of media on the political process?
Does that impact result in apathy among young people toward
politics?
Panel Discussion: Do You Know What's in Your Public Records?
This panel discussion
explored the freedom of information in government. The panelists
included Mr. Joe Adams, author of the Florida Public Records Handbook,
Ms. Barbara Petersen, President of the First Amendment Foundation in
Tallahassee, and Ms. JoAnn Carrin, Office of Open Government in
Tallahassee.
"Creating the Ideal President: Unlocking the Meaning in Candidate Framing"
In this presentation Dr. John Parmelee, Associate
Professor of Communication, examined candidate framing in the 2004 and
2008 presidential elections and how viewers interpret that framing.
UNF Voices Forum: Who Holds the Power in American Democracy?
Students, faculty, staff,
and community members joined in on this critical discussion on the role
of the individual in our representative democracy. Guest speakers
included Duval County Supervisor of Elections, Jerry Holland, and
Assistant Professor of Political Science and Public Administration, Dr.
Kyle Scott. The UNF Voices Forum was established by students
representing various UNF student organizations such as Critical Minds,
Project Affect, Americans for Informed Democracy, Students Without
Borders, and the Progressive Action Committee.
Face to Face Event with Former Senator Bob Graham
Students had the opportunity to engage in a
dialogue with former senator Bob Graham (D, Fla.) about the American presidency and the
upcoming election.
National and Global Youth Service Day
Several service activity
stations were set up on the UNF Green, and in front of the UNF library
including: Hope for the Homeless, Civic Engagement, Elderly Outreach,
Food for the Famished, Kids Korner, and Great American Bake Sale.
Students were able to learn that in just 5 minutes they could make a
difference!
Voter Registration Drive
Faculty members were encouraged to distribute
voter registration forms to their students during the first week of the
Fall 2008 semester.
Sunshine Week Audit Committee
The Sunshine Week Audit
Committee was comprised of students, faculty, and staff interested in the
open access to information in government. Dr. Berrin Beasley, Associate
Professor of Communication, trained the committee on how to request
public documents and gave an overview of the Sunshine law and its
importance. Committee members then were able to choose an issue of
interest to them and request public records related to issue. Students
visited public agencies (such as City Hall) and requested the records as
a test of agency compliance with Chapter 119 of Florida statutes.
TLO Trip to Washington, D.C.
Ambassador and UNF Visiting Scholar Nancy Soderberg
led a group of 22 students on a transformational learning opportunity to
Washinton, DC where they had the opportunity to discuss their policy

Mock Political Convention
UNF students participated as
delegates and volunteers in this two-day Mock Convention along with
students from Duval County High Schools, Edward Waters College, Jacksonville University, and Florida Community College at Jacksonville. Students
decided on party platforms and candidates for Democrat and Republican
parties. This event was sponsored by Supervisor of Elections Office.
Jacksonville Day at the Florida Capitol
Jacksonville Day at the
Florida Capitol took place Thursday, January 24, 2008. UNF students were part of
the Jacksonville delegation to the State Capitol along with members of
the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce. Students met with state
legislators, attended a Higher Education Appropriations Committee
meeting, and participated in a private tour of the governor's mansion.

"Technology: Threat to Democracy?"
In this lecture Dr. Paul Harwood examined the impact of our technological usage on democracy.

Constitution Day 2006
A debate was held
between a representative from the ACLU and a UNF professor on Executive
Powers. Pocket-sized Constitutions were given out at the debate.
