I. OBJECTIVE & PURPOSE
To establish policies and procdures on awarding scholarships to students from Latin America and the Caribbean.
II. STATEMENT OF POLICY
A. Under SS 1009.21(10)(e), full-time students from Latin America and the Caribbean who receive scholarships from the federal or state government, and who attend a Florida institute of higher education, shall be classified as residents for tuition purposes.
B. The minimum amount of an LAC scholarship is the estimated cost of textbooks as published by the University in its financial aid materials. Currently, that amount is $300 per semester or $600 per academic year. This scholarship must be made available from E&G funds.
C. Each LAC scholarship must be documented with a student contract that stipulates the number and distribution of hours included in the student’s degree program, on a semester-by-semester basis.
D. All units with admitted students who are pursuing an approved plan of study may provide qualified students with LAC scholarships. Colleges are expected to use LAC scholarships as a means of contributing toward annual enrollment goals.
E. The minimum GPA requirement for both new and continuing LAC scholarship students, whether graduate or undergraduate, shall be set by the sponsoring units, but in no event may a LAC award be made to a student who is not in good academic standing. Continuing LAC scholarship students will be expected to perform 25 hours of approved community service each semester. Graduate students who are enrolled for thesis or dissertation hours will retain eligibility even if they fall below the standard full-time enrollment level of nine semester hours. LAC scholarship students are exempted from the 9 semester-hour summer enrollment requirement.
