The Campus is Moving from Analog to Digital Television

The university is moving from analog television service to digital service. The contract with Comcast has expired and Comcast will turn off their services on Aug. 7. The new service provider, Campus Televideo, will deliver a digital signal to the campus as well as an expanded channel line-up.

Analog TVs and some early TVs with built in tuners will require a converter box.  ITS will purchase converter boxes for those who request them and charge back the department $125 per box. Departments might want to consider purchasing a digital television in lieu of the converter box to take advantage of the benefits of the improved quality of picture and sound.  Departments who want to request a converter box should contact their C-Tech.

How do I know if I need a converter box?

If you have an analog TV (has a large, bulky back end) or an early flat screen (has a 'pre-standards' tuner, which may not be able to acquire digital channels), you will either need to request a converter box ($125 charge back) or replace the TV. If you are unsure if a converter box is needed for your television, please contact your C-Tech.

Can I purchase a converter box from a local retailer?

No, UNF’s new digital service requires a special converter box to accommodate the number of channels being delivered. ITS is ordering the special converter boxes for the departments that request them.

What company is providing the new digital television service?

The content provider is DirecTV and the distributer is Campus Televideo.

What is the monthly cost to departments for the new digital television service?

Departments will not be billed for the service.

What channels will be available after August 7?
