April 12 – April 15, 2012

On April 13, 2012, thirty-two students and 12 faculty from Auburn University, Georgia Southern University, Michigan State University, University of Arkansas, University of Maryland, University of North Florida, University of North Texas and University of Tennessee participated in the 4th Annual IANA Logistics & Supply Chain Management Case Competition at the University of North Florida. The students analyzed a business case study that addressed supply chain issues facing West Marine, a leading retailer and wholesaler of boating equipment through retail stores, Internet and catalogs. Students from the University of Arkansas impressed the judges with their presentation and took away first place honors. The defending champions from the University of Tennessee placed second. Congratulations to all the teams that participated in the IANA Logistics & Supply Chain Management Case Competition. An event of this caliber would not be possible without the support of the Intermodal Association of North America. We are very grateful for their sponsorship.

The student presentations were judged by a group of business professionals representing a broad section of related industries from all across the United States. Michael Breen of the of the Chamber of Commerce JaxUSA Partnership, John Emery of Spectrum Logistics (retired), Tim Feemster from Grubb-Ellis, Debbie McDowell of Seaonus (formerly ICS Logistics), Phil Shook of C.H. Robinson, and Bob Utz from McCormick & Company served on the distinguished panel of judges.

The Intermodal Association of North America is the presenting sponsor and the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals Jacksonville Roundtable sponsored the awards banquet. On Saturday following the case competition, the students enjoyed a comprehensive tour of the Anheuser Busch bottling plant and the campus of the University of North Florida.

The students had a wonderful opportunity to network with their peers, learn about the academic programs at other universities, hone their analysis and presentation skills, visit the Anheuser-Busch Brewery, and enjoy the sunshine and night life in Jacksonville Beach.

Some of the judges and faculty offered the following comments:

"It is a pleasure to be associated with the IANA Logistics & Supply Chain Management Case Competition. I am always impressed with the commitment and creativity of the students to solve very knotty logistics problems thrown their way during the competition; our industry needs these bright young men and women, and they are our future.”

John Emery, Judge Spectrum Logistics (retired)

"The IANA Logistics and Supply Chain Management Case Competition hosted by the University of North Florida brings together student teams from leading business schools in the supply chain arena. Not only does this event give students an opportunity to hone their analytical and presentation skills, but it also provides excellent networking opportunities with fellow students and business professionals. The welcoming and friendly atmosphere created by the hosts at UNF provides additional incentives for participating universities to keep coming back year after year. There is no doubt that this event is the premier SCM case competition for undergraduate students in the US."
Christian Hofer, University of Arkansas

“I will have to be on top of my game since they will be knocking on my door soon. I thought the event was well organized and beneficial and definitely gave the students a glimpse of what really happens in the industry when facing tough decisions and deadlines. I was inspired by the level of knowledge that all of the students demonstrated and took back several ideas to incorporate into my own business. UNF and IANA should be very proud of this event. The event is a winner for everyone involved."
Debbie McDowell, Seaonus

"We all thoroughly enjoyed the competition. Even though they didn’t “win”, the students felt it was a very enjoyable and worthwhile event. Many thanks to IANA and UNF for organizing and hosting the competition.”

Bixby Cooper, Michigan State University

“Thanks again for inviting me to judge the IANA Case Competition. What a great group of young professionals-to-be. I wish I could hire them all! And as others have said, I probably learn as much from the day as the students do.”

Bob Utz, McCormick & Company
