Make the Connection: K-12 Outreach
The UNF School of Engineering is committed to community outreach in both public and private schools in Duval, Nassau, Clay, and St. Johns Counties. What is an Engineer Anyway is an academic enrichment and career exploration program for K-12 students in the greater Jacksonville Area.
Since the UNF School of Engineering began its outreach program in 2005, our goal has been to increase the quality, diversity, and number of students prepared to major and work in engineering and technology fields. Experience has shown that the best way to help our young students understand what engineers do is through a combination of classroom presentations, field trips and activities, and special events that focus on engineering.
What is an Engineer Anyway? is perfect for all grades and can be customized to the age of your students and the amount of class time you can allow. Students will learn what it means to be a civil, electrical, and mechanical engineer, the types of projects those engineers work on and what the typical work environment is like for an engineer. They will also learn about other disciplines of engineering professionals and industry.
The presentation can be expanded to include a segment on the history of engineering and/or a segment on jobs of the future.
If you have a topic of specific interest to your students, please contact us to see if we can accommodate you.
High School Field Trips to the UNF School of Engineering Labs
Bring your high school students to the UNF School of Engineering where they will not only benefit from the What is an Engineer Anyway? presentation but also get the opportunity to tour our civil, mechanical, and electrical labs and talk to our engineering students and professors.
If time and scheduling allows, your students can enhance their field trip with a campus tour and even eat lunch in our new Student Union or at the Osprey Cafeteria.
Throughout the academic year, the UNF School of Engineering Outreach Program sponsors many events targeted to the K-12 community. These include but are not limited to:
If you would like to be notified of upcoming special events, please send an e-mail with your contact information and we will gladly put you on our distribution list.
